Ordering BM dresses at different stores

My matron of honor lives out of town and wants to order her bridesmaid dress there so she can get measured and have alterations done before she gets in town for the wedding. I've heard that all the BM dresses should be ordered at the same time due to different dye lots. Do you think I can let her get the dress at a different store? She is the Matron of honor so if hers was the only one that looked different it might be ok. Thoughs?

Re: Ordering BM dresses at different stores

  • All of my BM and MOH got their dresses in different states..they all match really well.
    You should be fine.

  • I've ordered from separate stores and it's been completely fine.  Part of me feels the whole "dye lots" thing is just a scare tactic to try and get all of your business.

  • My MOH is doing the same thing, for what it's worth.

I doubt there will be that much difference... I agree with PPs, it seems a lot like a scare tactic.

I think, that if you want the colors to match exactly, all the dresses should be purchased from the same store at the same time.

There is the potential that different dye lots may have slightly different hues, so little, though that I wouldn't worry about it.
  • The "dye lots" thing is honestly so ridiculous that I can't stand it.
  • the whole "dye lot" thing dates back to when dresses were hand dyed! now the colors are all uniform because the colors are now done by computers!

I am a quilter and have, in fact, purchased fabric -- exact same designer, same color -- at different times, in different stores and there have been slight (very slight, as I mentioned in my post) differences in color.  I know it sounds ridiculous, but it happens from time to time.

Again, it's so slight that it doesn't really matter, especially with something like a few dresses.

I'm a costumer for a community theater and too have had plain weave cotton fabrics be off in color.  It can be an issue if exact matching is important.  However, I've never had a problem with a synthetic, or higher end fabrics.
  • Try this on for size...When I was a BM in a friends wedding the store (a private boutique) told her the same thing, so we all got measured else where (at an addtional cost because they'll charge you if you're not ordering from them) and ordered from one store.  The store then shipped our dresses (which was an addtional cost) to each of us around the country.  We got to the wedding and all had VERY slight color differences.  Nothing anyone would notice at first glance and it didn't show up in any of the pictures but I thought it was interesting.

That being said, David's Bridal always shows up the same color, regardless of the store, in my experience....

In the end, even if they're a little off - no one will notice! :)  I'd say if it makes it easier on your girls- do it :)
  • I think it depends a lot on fabric type as well.  I feel like chiffon would vary more in color shades than say satin would.  There was a post on here a while back where a bride had her BM's in chiffon and when the dresses came in, they were obviously 2 different colors, and not even close to the same shade.  Its totally up to you and what you feel comfortable doing.
