Dinner vs. Hearty Appetizers

I really don't have to have the meat and potatoes style dinner. I would rather have a variety of fun and different food. Many types of appetizers that would fill you as a meal would... Thoughts? At what time is it okay to serve just appetizers? Thanks girls : )

I think that would be fine. As for time I am not sure, I would think a late night or early afternoon wedding seems right for an appetizer only recpetion. It's not at a meal time so people won't expect a meal but they will still be well fed.

If your reception is at a meal time, you should serve a full meal or have enough appetizers (variety + quantity) that people could make a meal out of it.  You should also have seating for everyone, even if you just serve apps.  You also can really serve anything you want for a meal--it's not either meat and potatoes or heavy appetizers.

Ditto Jessica.  Have you looked into doing stations?  That might give people the quantity/feel you're looking for without being a "traditional" meat and potato dinner.

It's more about quantity than type. You can do "heavy appetizers" at any time of day - I believe 15-20 pieces per person are good for a meal, but a caterer can give you a better determination of what you'll need. I went to a 6 pm wedding with stations once - they had sliders, fried ravioli, eggrolls, 2 types of meatballs, a cheese display, and several other things, as well as a dessert bar.

I called my brother (an avowed foodie) last weekend to ask him if, as a guest, he'd be offended to come to a wedding and find (instead of a sit-down plated meal) a huge buffet selections of appetizers and desserts.  His response?  (Stated like I was a complete idiot):

"Uh...NO.  Those are the best PART."

Which is pretty much my opinion, too.  As long as there's enough food to fill me up, I'd be delighted to find lots of zesty taste options rather than a piece of chicken and a scoopful of rice.  :)

We've just decided to do the same. Does anyone have any "creative" or ideas of what their "menu" is going to look like?? Our caterer is great, and has been throwing out ideas left & right... but we feel like we're missing something. So far our ideas are as follows:

Cold/Lighter cocktail hour food:Gourmet Cheese Boards & Cracker with Chutney Topped Brie & Artisan Breads
    Assorted Veggie Platter

    Shrimp Cocktail Platter
Caprese Skewers (Mozzarella, Grape Tomatoes w/Fresh Basil)
    Bread Bowl w/Spinach Dip
    Ham & Basil Pinwheels
    Chips and Salsa?

    Hot/heavier reception food:
    Asparagus Beef Roll-ups
    Italian Style Meatballs
    Scallops Wrapped in Bacon
    Spinach Bacon Tartlets
    Chicken KabobsBeef SkewersStuffed Mushrooms

We're also planning on a dessert bar, and since we're in VT, we're looking into Ben & Jerry's too! :o)
