Sun Palace vs. Aventura Spa Palace

I've been looking into the Palace Resorts for quite a while and have narrowed down our search to these two! I just wanted to get some help from those who have already been there to get some more insight. I really like aventura, but wonder if we will be disappointed about not having a beach. Any thoughts?

Re: Sun Palace vs. Aventura Spa Palace

  • We stayed last dec @ Aventura and LOVED it!  We can't say enough good things about it from food to service it was awesome.  We visited the other Palace resorts in the area and it was by far the newest and nicest.  It does have a "beach" area around the lagoon, but it wasn't the same as being able to walk down the beach.  We spent most of our time at the pool bar or on excursions so the beach wasn't a big deal to us.  We did go on one of the excursions to the Mayan ruins (the smaller one can't remember the name srry) and it had an AMAZING beach.  You could always take the shuttle there and get a cab back if you wanted to hangout there on the beach for the day.  If you want to see some pics let me know!  Have fun!  Hope this helped a little!

Just got back from our 3rd visit to Sun Palace on Wed night. We once again had a great time. We went to Aventura last Dec before they started allowing kids on the south side and had a great time there also. Palace Resorts are the best.

Really depends on what you are looking for. SP is smaller, intimate, romantic and much newer having been rebuilt in 2007. ASP is larger and more spread out. They now allow families on south side of property.  We thought the rooms at ASP were smaller and not as updated. However, ASP does have a larger spa and lovely indoor heated pool. SP spa is smaller but treatments were fantastic (mani, pedi, back massage, body wrap, facial and holistice massage). I loved them all.

We found the food at both to be very good, however, when using room service at ASP, food was not hot when delievered.

As far as beach is concerned, I liked the lagoons at ASP becasue you could swim anytime, snorkel (lots of fish) and kayak. You still have gorgeous ocean views at ASP.  Beach at SP is beautiful, however, suffered a lot of erosion due to hurricane last month and left a lot of exposed coral and rocks at the beginning of the ocean.  Ocean waves on most days are quite strong so you have to be careful unless you get a rare calm day. The ocean tends to be calmer just south of SP in front of the condos next door or Club Med which is just a short walk down the beach.

Like I said, it really depends on what you are looking for, both are great resorts.  I'll be happy to answer questios or send pics I took at both resorts. Have a great time.

BTW, pp was referring to Mayan ruins at Tulum and Tulum beach which is stunning! I would highly recommend visiting there.
  • I would love to see any pictures you both have, and any input on the excursions you went on. They all sound really amazing, and we don't know which ones we would want to go on above the others. My e-mail is laura_fett@hotmail.com if you want to send pictures. Thanks for your help!
  • Hi Laura,

Just sent you an email with previous reviews of both SP and ASP trips along with pics that I posted on tripavisor.com.  Also a couple of pics from the visit we just went on.
  • If a beach is important-go to Sun. The beach at ASP is awful compared to other beaches in the area. It's like a weird step thing. I didn't like it at all.

  • We actually just got back from Aventura on Monday.  We had a FAB time.  We knew about the beach ahead of time and we actually live at the beach so that wasn't a big deal for us.  Frankly, there is always so much going on at the pool that I probably wouldnt have went down to a beach had there been one.

We stayed on the non-kids side but ventured over at night to the kids side and I might have only seen a handful of kids the whole time so that also wasnt an issue.  We didnt really venture out much to do anything, just kind of hung at the resort.  The activities staff was wonderful and my husband and I both really enjoyed the spa.  Also, if you like to work out, they have a great gym and juice bar.  I will say this, the food was excellent (except for Room Service) but I think if we would have stayed at a smaller place we would have gotten bored with the food.  If you do go, def eat at Mudaca, Mo Mo no hana and La Trattoria.  We had our honeymoon dinner at the Mexican restaurant where you get a special menu to order off of, but I actually just ordered off othe regular menu and it was excellent.

Remember, one of the great things about Palace is you can dine at other Palace resorts in the area. When we have stayed at SP in the past, we have dined at Moon Palace, Beach Palace, Cancun Palace and Isla Mujeres. This time we were perfectly content to just dine at SP, especially since we were on concierge level and had access to upgraded room service menu with more options and had our concierege dinner on the beach which was a totally different menu than the other restaurants.

  • I have been trying to send you pics, but they won't attach. grrr...  Sorry I will keep trying!
  • ellen, I don't know if you've been able to send the pictures, but I haven't seen an e-mail if you did. keep me posted, and thanks for your help!
  • Thanks everyone for your posts on this because we have narrowed it down to SP and ASP as well.  We are leaning more towards SP right now.  I hope to book in the next week.  If anyone who has gone there wants to send me more info about what excursions you did, what to avoid, pics, and more I would love that.  isualum08@gmail.com

    Thanks ladies!

  • Hi I've been looking at these resorts as well and think that I've narrowed it down to SP. I've found it at 2,745 at the cheapest for flight and airfare in July and was wondering if that was alot for a honeymoon or not?
  • arrait07- we are paying 3400 for a week stay at the SP in April.  It was cheaper earlier but we waited to book.  I think 2700 is about right.
  • This was a hard decision for my fiance and I as well! We tried to get into a few of them and they were booked out for our date so we had to go to Playacar Palace. They all look very nice to me! I think no matter what you pick you will have an amazing time! :)
  • Sounds like Aventura for us! Hopefully booking this week!

We decided on Sun Palace.  Some things like snorkeling, tours, and stuff like that is included in the price.  Also you can eat and play at the sister resorts as well.  You can walk out of the resort where there is shopping and all that as well.  I heard the beach is great and concierge level is worth it. I also learned that 98 percent of the rooms have ocean views.  That's pretty neat.  Overall I after all of my research, this resort seemed to have the most bang for our buck and it was in our budget range.  It gets great reviews on tripadvisor.com!

  • I guess we waited a bit too long to book, now we are going to the Sun Palace, but it will be just as good!
