  Initially they look the same.  However, they wear differently.  In 6-12 months white gold will start to have a yellowish cast to it.  It is essentially gold, which is yellow.  They add different alloys, like nickel, to give it a whiter color.  Then it is rhodium plated.  When the rhodium wears off, the ring will not look as white.  You can have it replated or dipped, but you will always have to do this maintenance to keep them the same color.  Platinum comes out of the ground white and stays that color.  It tends to mar, or turn a softer gray.  When you polish it, it will look brand new.

  they'll look fine now, but age differently.
  if you get your band re-plated regularly, you won't have a problem.

  My friend has a plat. e ring and white gold wedding band and it looks perfectly fine...but hers is a half diamonds so you don't really see the band of her wedding band too much anyway

  I might see if you can have something made in Palladium. It's from the Platinum family, but cheaper. My e-ring is in Palladium, and wedding band is in Platinum. You cant tell the difference. And I don't have to worry about having anything dipped.
  
  If you do decide to stay with the white gold, I would not solder them together. If you have to have the band redipped, you don't want that to effect the platinum.

  You can rhodium platnum but if they are soldered together you will have to pay for 2 rings to be dipped since technically they are 2 different rings. I have seen people mix them all the time and nobody but the owner knows they are different materials.

  Thanks ladies, this is helpful!  My wedding band will almost all diamonds so you're probably right, no one should know but me.  I have decided to not have them soldered together at this time and plan to have my wedding band replated as often as it's needed.  I just wondered if anyone else out  there had done the same and what they thought.  We are working with one of the oldest and most reputable jewelers in our area and they suggested that 14 carat white gold would look best if we decided to not go with platinum.  Since my ring is being custom designed by their bench jeweler, I know it will look beautiful when it's finished... I just need a shot in the arm of faith and confidence and need to stop second guessing myself

  My friend's engagement ring is white gold and her wedding band is platinum. She told me years ago that she regretted getting a different metal because they wear differently. I learned my lesson through her and went with the same metal for both of mine.

  
  

  Make sure your ring is from a jeweler that will re-plate for free. If not it will be an expensive habit ($40 a pop) and some people need to do it up to 2x a year. Some can get by more than a year without replating, but others can only get a few months.

  
  

  You may be able to return the ring for a platinum version. If your jeweler doesn't replate for free it may be worth the cost difference to not have to worry about cost and hassle of replating down the road.

  
  

  Both of my rings are white gold and luckily the jeweler I got them from replates for free for life... so I can live with it, but I do kind of wish that we just went with platinum.

  My rings are white gold and platinum and they look just fine. I've been wearing them together for several months and they both look the same colour. Don't worry too much. If after a few months you think they start to look different just have the white gold re-coated and the platinum polished. Really, it's no big deal.
