How to change your name, start to finish, in 2.25 hours!

I read so many horror stories, so I'm going to tell mine, start to finish, in what (brag alert) might be the quickest anyone has ever changed their name.

7:00am Arrive at the DMV at NW Hwy and Jupiter. They don't open until 8, but I brought my Kindle and a sweater, and I was the third one in line. By 8am the line was around the corner.

8:00am Enter DMV

8:30am Leave DMV with temporary license

9:00am Arrive at SS Office at Royal and 75 (this took so long due to morning traffic). SS Office opens at 9, and there was a line going outside.

9:01am Go inside SS Office with my number they handed me outside

9:15 leave SS Office with receipt.

9:16 Become confused at what to do with the rest of my morning I had taken off work, and just go in anyways.

TADA!!!

  • AWESOME!! It's all about getting in that line early!! Good job!
  • Ok smartie pants.  :)  That part was easy for me too.  But remember, you still have to change your:

    Bank accounts
    Bills
    Mortgage
    Credit cards
    Gym membership
Insurance cards/accounts (Life, health, vision, dental)
    Car title
    Passport
    AAA card
E-mail (or in my case, just say to heck with it.)

I'm sure there's more.  I think my grand total was 3 hours and 6 months.

Oh goodness I know that! I just heard about 5 hour lines at the SS office and DMV and I was setting myself up for a day of misery. I have already done all of my insurance (because you can do that over the phone), and I still have to do my bank accounts, 401K, car note, and passport. But I'm just going to wait to do the passport until I need it, since I don't travel internationally much, and they're only good for 10 years.
  • Nice job! I have nightmares about that DPS location which sucks because it is the closest one to me. Going early is definitely the way to do it!
  • I'm so dreading this. I did learn the hard way about having to get there about an hour early when we were trying to schedule my daughter's driving test. I'm dreading this so much I might not change my name. Lol. But it would be inappropriate for me to keep my ex's name.

Yeah, I didn't have too much trouble at the DMV or SS office.  The 5 hour lines at the DMV are mostly over the summer when the kids are all getting their licenses.  For me, the other stuff was much harder.  I'd think I was done and then something else would pop up.  My stupid bank took forever to get it right.
  • Cwagg, the big thing you did that saved you time was NOT going in the summer.  Both offices run a MUCH higher volume in the summer since parents don't have to arrange a ride for their kids to/from school, teenagers aren't swarming the DMV for permits and DL, etc.  I went early one day during the summer and it did not work for me... at all.  If you can wait it out like you did until the fall and even maybe February in the spring, you'll be much better off!

Glad you got done so quickly. :)  Stephie is right though -- the banks/credit cards alone took me 4 hours and they still aren't all done ,lol.

  • That's a good point about waiting until fall. I get married in June and might just wait til September to do DL SS.

  • Duh, Amy I didn't even think of that.
Well, I was proud of myself for my efficiency nonetheless. :)
  • OMG! Undecided SoOoOo not looking forward to switching everything over! Geeze...wish it wasn't such a hassle and if you changed with DMV and SS Office that everyone else would automatically catch it (bank, savings, credit cards, etc). <<Just dreaming here I guess! LOL

Is it really a must to change your car title?
