How much does a DJ cost?

I'm working on refining my preliminary budget. Does anybody know about how much I need to allot for the DJ? I don't need any fancy extras (lighting, etc.) just someone to play the music and keep the party going

    It depends where you live.  Our DJ is charging us $500 and we are in central Maine.

    They can cost anywhere from $300 - $1000. I would say guess high then the worst that can happen is that you have extra money.

    Mine was $850 for 5 hours, but I think I think that was cheaper than he normally charges because he's a long-time friend and he's out of Boston.  It will definitely depend on your area.

    were paying $850 for 5 hours- we were going to try to find a budget DJ- but then I thought back to past weddings we've been to, and we realized that the DJ can kind of set the mood for the night and we wanted someone who wasn't going to be cheesy or anything.

    We got ours for $500 for 6 hours...we negotiated an extra hour from him.  We're getting married in Central Maine, and I specifically looked for one in that area, knowing I'd find a better price.

    We paid $900- no time restrictions. He is going to play our ceremony and reception music. and there are lighting options available too.

    We found one for 750 out of Scarborough. The first people I talked to quoted me over 2,000 which seemed crazy to me!
