off-registry gifts

I apreciate any gift we receive, really I do. However something is puzzling me.

I noticed today that someone (or more than one someone) purchased off-registry gifts. For the most part, its been fine by me… with the exection of one gift: twin-sized sheets. We have a king-sized bed, and registered exclusively for that size bedding and linens. So, I'm confused how someone bought the opposite size sheets. LOL Unless they just didn't read the packaging?? I've been perplexed since seeing that. LOL At least its from the same store we registered at thus making the return easier! Guess I know where I'll be the day after the shower party. LOL

Anyone else experience this? If so, did you ever figure out why?

(For the record, everyone who knows me, knows I don't own a twin-sized bed. Part of me feels like its a hint from whoever for kids… yeah my family would do that! LOL)

Re: off-registry gifts

  • My grandma just gives things she already has... for the shower we got paper towels, tp, paper plates, napkins, and tissues.

Maybe they did the same? Or maybe they want you to have kids right away?

  • Are you talking about things that are showing up on your registry that you didn't register for? It's possible that someone made a purchase for themselves while they were shopping for your gift, and the cashier forgot to get out of the "registry screen." We had a handful of non-registry items show up, and that turned out to be what happened, as we didn't recieve any of them. So it's possible that someone was just purchasing twin sheets for themselves at the same time they purchased your gift. :)
  • LIke Cackle said, those may not be gifts for you.  Don't worry about it until you actually get them.  And then, don't worry about it still, just return them, which should be easy to do if they were added to your registry.  And that was a lot of LOLs.
  • It could very well be that they didn't read the packaging...I've had to return several sets of sheets because I was dopey and didn't look at the sizeon the packaging (and some companies just make the sizes so difficult to find that I can't help thinking that more people don't make those mistakes, haha)

The possibility also exists that while they were at the store buying something from your registry, they purchased twin sheets for their own home and it showed up on your registry because they didn't tell the cashier (or the internet, whichever) that the sheets were not part of the registry.  I had several things that were "on" my registry (like random shower curtains, air freshener, ect) that were not given to me because they were purchased for the gifter's home while they were purchasing something from my registry.

I really doubt they are pressure to have kids...I have a funny feeling that if someone REALLY wanted to send that message, they'd give you lingerie and a breast-milk pump:-)

I think it's likely they bought them for themselves.  Keep it on your registry anyway, just in case it does show up as a gift for you, and then in that case it will make the sheets very easy to return.  I'd be surprised if you get them though.

  • It is an odd custom here but people do give twin sheets.  The thought is if you have guests needing to stay on the couch you have a nice set of sheets to cover it for them.  But my family and friends are weird so there is that.

  • Yes, the twin sheets appeared on our registry… I was confused until I read the post by Crackle6 and the subsequent confirmations. I didn't know that was possible! Hadn't thought about it, but it makes perfect sense ladies. Thank you!! Smile
  • I would agree with Crackle and the others. They probably bought something for themselves while buying things for you!
  • I will never understand why people give certain things for gifts, I have a co-worker that seriously bought me baby clothes in hopes that we would have children...mind you I have two already and have been unable to carry for several years.  I just said thank you and ended up handing them over to someone with a new born =)  Its not exactly like they were on my registery =) lol

  • Cyndilouwho77… that's pretty funny. Someone with no sense of humor would have been offended. But its cool you brushed it off :-)

I shouldn't be surprised at off-registry gifts, I've been to enough shower parties, and heard enough "WTH??" remarks afterwards LOL I suppose I didn't realize off registry purchases could be added to your list. Odd. Though potentially useful if a return is needed.

Well, so long as I'm able to return odd gifts, I'll have a good laugh returning them! LOL
  • I'm confused...how do you know someone bought these for you?  Did you already have a shower and received them as a gift?

Otherwise, I would assume someone bought twin sheets by mistake (although you can hardly mix up twin vs. king sheets -- by weight or by price)...

Maybe the person ordered them online and the wrong item was sent.

I would just chalk it up as an error and return them.
  • cosmogirlWed144… I was looking at my registry (online) and noticed that an item was added to the registry and listed as "fullfilled". Basically, it lists the twin sized sheets and where it lists how many were requested, it says "0" and how many were bought it says "1".

Similarly, a set of the king sized sheets that I registered for were purchased BUT not in a color I had "requested"… I thought that was funny too, but since they are the right size, I figured, who knows maybe the person liked that color better than what I picked. LOL

In any event, what the others wrote, that someone bought me something and the twin sheets for themselves and they both got marked towards the registry…

Whatever the case is, I'll find out soon enough! Hahaha (and I'll be back to update my post LOL)Smile
  • I just noticed 8 (that's right, eight) things "added" to our registry.  They are all related bar items, so I'm guessing someone is making us a basket.  Only problem is, we have all that stuff, hence why we didn't register for it, except for 2 things that we find very, very ugly.  So I'm practicing my "oh this is so nice! thank you so much!" face for the shower and then will return them all as soon as I get home.  Only downside is it's not like we can get cash to buy other stuff we registered for that is un-bought at other store, will only be able to get store credit for this one place.
  • So, just SOME of the off-registry items that magically appeared on our registry were received as gifts. LOL Mnols, I'm wondering if the same happened for you? I also noticed that we recieved gifts from the registry that weren't reflected as "fullfilled" on the list itself.

As nice as the idea of a registry is in organizational means, it isn't fool-proof.

To all those who warned me that family tends to think they know you better than you know you, by purchacing gifts that bear no resemblence to, at least the style, of the things you registered for… You are so right. LOL I appreciate the thoughtfulness from my family, but our tastes are oh so different!

The lessons I learned are: appreciate generosity, even if the style isn't what you prefer; random things end up on your registry that you didn't ask for – this means nothing in reality; keep ALL the boxes of the stuff you did get, because you might realize, after bringing it all home that "you know what, I thought this was cool, but it doesn't work for me"… and finally, when giving a gift, ALWAYS include a gift receipt.

More than the party or gifts themselves, the attendance and generousity of my family is what meant the most to me. Seeing everyone come together, for me, was overwhelming. If they hadn't brought a thing with them, just the fact that all those people took the time to attend my shower was awesome. What surprised me however is the generosity… I made a point to have most of the list be items that were reasonably priced and practical (under $80), I only added "splurge" items because I was following the advice of the woman at Bed Bath who was helping me out… turns out, almost all the gifts I received were what she helped me pick!!!

So, I'll be going back to the store, to return things. NONE are duplicates. They are indeed things I asked for on the registry that in reality, either don't fit our space, or aren't what I thought they were somehow. And in exchange, we'll get the practical stuff we had picked out, which are things we actually need.
