Deposits and Vendors and Clauses - Oh My!!

Hi Knot people....

I found a wonderful caterer, who I think is fantastic....but, they are requesting 50% deposit upfront and we are about 9 months from the wedding date.  Now, they have been in business for over 16 years, have a stellar reputation and amended the lanuage in their contract regarding the deposit so we'd feel more comfortable.  But, I don't know anyone whose worked with them personally.  And, they were unmovable about the deposit percentage.

This is an NYC wedding...and, probably the biggest deposit I've ever put down in my life - how big a deposit have you guys put down and how early, especially curious about other NYC brides???

Thanks!!

  • I think we paid our caterer less than a 10% deposit (probably closer to 7%).   This was in Central VA though, so not a big urban area.

  • We got married in South Jersey.  We had to put down 25% when we booked 10 months out.   Another 25% at 6 months (or if we had booked at 6 months is would have been 50%).  The balance was due just before the wedding (a week or 2).   If there were extra costs we had to pay them that night  (for example we provided the alcohol, but ran out of Jack Daniels. They went and got more.  Or if we wanted to keep the party going, there would have been extra costs, etc)

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • I'm in Atlanta and we paid a deposit of 50% with the remaining due a week before the wedding.

  • Our venue (which provides the catering) required a standard deposit amount which in our case has worked out to be about 7%.

I would post on the local board for NYC for reviews of the caterer.

  • We had to put 20% down with the remainder due two weeks before the wedding. We've been giving then money each month though so the total won't be so bad. Our wedding is almost half paid for already.

  • We put 50% down with our caterer. We put it on a credit card. I felt more comfortable with the option of charging back if I had to.
  • I'm on Long Island (near NYC) and our caterer (which was our venue) required a 50% deposit paid in installments spread out over about 4 months, with the final portion of the deposit due about 8 months before our wedding.  I don't think 50% is unusual for the area.

  • Our deposit will be a dollar amount rather than a percentage.  It is non-refundable, but it is transferable, should plans change (we can apply it to another date or just to $XXX worth of their services).
