Question for the girls with ink

My sister and I have been talking for years about getting matching tattoos. It's a little harder now since she lives down in Texas and I'm up here in Ohio. We've been thinking about getting them a couple days before the wedding. She'll get up here late Wednesday on the 17th so really our only chance to get them would be sometime on Thursday. We're considering getting them just above our ankles and *this* design or something similar. I know it's still going to be red for the wedding, but I'm concerned that it might seep and get on my dress. This will be her 4th tattoo and my first (she's making me go first so I don't chicken out lol).  If we don't do it now, I have no idea when we'll have the chance to again. Is all this impractical right before the wedding or am I stressing needlessly?

Re: Question for the girls with ink

  • Yeah that would be a big no for me. Godforbid it got infected, or your ankle swells up or whatever.

    Not worth it. I'd wait.

hmmm...I say do it if you want...my dad tattoed for 33 years before he passed away this past spring and so I have learned a few things....as I got a tattoo for my daughter on my 21st birthday (she was 1 at the time) and I got the tattoo and then went out on the town. The tattoo will need to be bandaged afterwards.  This will catch any of the seepage you talk about.  But after a while....4-5 hours...you should be able to take it off and because it will be so fresh, it will look GREAT!!!!  Its the weeks following that it will start to scab and peel and itch...but it would look great for the wedding...and its going on your ankle...no real need to worry about the seep....growing up in a tattoo shop....right after the tattoo was done...has always been my favorite time to view a tattoo....and then after its healed...it always looks the best right after you put lotion on it....I say go for it....what a cool way to include your sister in your big day and make the tattoo even more meaningful....

Growing up in this environment-you might think I would have lots of tattoos, but I only have two.  A rose on my ankle (first one) and then I have a lilly on my shoulder for  my daughter lillian and after I had my second daughter olivia, I had a koi fish added under the lilly...but they mean something to me....and I think its important if your going to get permanent art on your body to remember a few things.  A) It should mean something to you (and this obviously does mean a lot to you!!!!)  B) Only do it if YOUR ready to do it...because it is permanent and it should be a BIG decision.....

Sounds like you  have a winner....good luck...I want to see pictures!

  • hmmm, I have two and for me the swelling was down by two days later, but I also didn't get them on my ankles.  I'm inclined to say to wait because if you do get an infection it would be bad not to be able to walk (normally) down the aisle.  But if you don't think you'll have another chance, the go for it!

  • oh sorry...tattoo geek coming out in me....make sure you find a tattoo shop that has all their licenses and are health department approved...it should be a reputable shop to make sure what first PIP said...you dont want to take the chance of it not being done right and in this area, I think its VERY important to make sure the place you choose knows exactly what they are doing.....

They get SO itchy!  My work computer won't let me look at the link.  How big is it?  Would your shoe rub on it?  Are you going on a honeymoon right away?  If you are going on your honeymoon right after remember you can't submerge it in water for 2 weeks after you get it, so hot tubs and pools are out!
If it's not very big, your shoe won't rub on it and you won't be going into water, I say go for it.  Otherwise no.

Sister has to leave on Sunday (and most shops in the area don't have sunday hours) so Thursday is really the only time. We've been talking about it for years, though with different designs. This is the first one where we were both like "yeah, I really like that!"  Placement got determined b/c I told her that I want to be able to see it without having to use a mirror but I could hide it if I need/want to.

  • I would NEVER get a tattoo that close to my wedding. Bad news bears.

  • Tattoos done correctly shouldn't "seep" for any longer then several hours after they're completed, so color rubbing off on your dress isn't an issue. However it will be a bit tender for a couple days so any sort of shoes close to the area may be uncomfortable. Also, if it by ANY chance starts to scab that early, anything that may rub the scab off will also remove some of the color saturation in your skin.

Ditto what PP said about hot tubs/pools/ocean water/etc. Otherwise, if none of that is an issue, you can absolutely get a tattoo that soon before hand.

  • I would be too afraid of something going wrong (like it getting infected) being that close beforehand. I'd wait.

<div>Not too big, I'm thinking about silver dollar size maybe a little bigger. It'll be above my ankle so shoe won't be touching it.  FI and I can't afford a HM right now so no worries there. </div>

I don't have any ink near my ankles, but I do have a large piece on the middle of my back and one on each hip. That being said, when the needle goes over the bone, it hurts something fierce. Other than that, I think you'll be fine. As PPs mentioned, there will be some tranfer of dye on to the bandage or wrap, but after you remove it and clean it, you should be ok. :)  let us know what you decide to do!

  • If you go to a good reputable shop everything should be good. I have a tattoo on my foot and I had very minimal seepage. Right after you get the tattoo the guy rubs lotion on you and wraps you up, you take off the bandage after 4 hours and you don't put it back on. my tattoo did not seep after I took off the bandage. I didn't swell at all.

I say go for it but be aware of a few things first.
    1. It will itch, never itch it, slap it. Sounds silly but it works magically and helps set the ink in.
    2. Talk to your artist about the best cream to put on it, I use A&D with mine but its really all down to preference.
    3. Do not swim or soak for at least 2-3 weeks after you get the tattoo, doing so will fade it.
    4. Try not to wear anything constricting on that part of your skin, it will drive you nuts.

As far as your concern, no it wont seep on your dress as long as you keep the cream and padding on it for 3 or 4 hours after the tattoo is done. Also it's okay to go a couple hours without the cream and I would suggest wearing it on there till right befopre you put your dress on then blotting it off with a water and cloth and then putting it back on immediately after you take your dress off.

I have 9 tattoos and will be getting 1 more a week before the wedding and one more the day after the wedding.

  • I would wait.  Not worth it to be uncomfortable on your wedding day and potentially have it seep through onto your dress.  Do you really want to be dealing with changing cream and padding in your dress?  Also, the no swimming for 2-3 weeks would be a huge turn off, depending on what your HM plans are.
  • Well, it is not going to seep that far out from the original date and your not going to go on a honey moon right away. DO IT! lol... you might not get another chance. Worse case, you have to put a bandage over it but if you are wearing a long dress no one is going to see it anyways. If you are working with a good place that you trust you should not have any issues.

  • Totally wait. You have to keep lotion or neosporin on it for numerous days after you get it, which can get on your dress and will be on your mind. Then, it'll start peeling and get uber itchy. Not worth the hassle right now, I would wait until you have time to take care of it properly.
  • i am always overly cautious after i get a tat and i apply the ointment for longer than they say and leave a bandage on longer than normal but like PP as long as its a reputable place you should be just fine :) btw i love the tat design! i may have to steal that and see if my sister would do it too!

<div>Here's another similar one I found <a href="http://pinterest.com/pin/93449760989444499/" rel="nofollow">http://pinterest.com/pin/93449760989444499/</a> </div><div>It's full color though so that would take more time and cost a bit more. I think we're gonna do it. If we don't do it now I have no idea when and we'd want them both by the same person. My dad's a pharmacist so if he thinks it's not looking right I may put a bandage back on it right before the wedding. I'll have a big dress on so no one will see the bandage.</div><div>
</div><div>Elaina, this will be my first tattoo but if I had others I probably wouldn't cover them.  I'm not going to have my sister cover her other tats. They're not offensive and they're part of her. </div><div>
</div><div>Thanks for all the input ladies, you've all been a big help. </div>

Well, I got a tattoo (My fourth and biggest piece) the beginning of this month. I thought it would look really cute,l since it was on my back. Well, it got infect and cause terrible hives and rashes. I soon got MRSA. Not trying to scare you, but I think if I had it to do over..I'd wait. So I think you should wait, but if your not to worried about it, go for it! Let us know what you do :)

  • I say absolutely go for it. I have a tattoo on my foot and on my ankle. They are a little tender there because of the bone, but nothing unbearable. The ones I have on my back I thought I was getting my back scratched they didnt hurt at all.
If the shop and artist are reputable then you will not have any seepage after day 1. Plus being that new for your wedding day you wont really have to worry about itching or major swelling. Both my foot and ankle didnt swell very much. It also depends on if the artist has a heavy hand (hurts more, more swelling) or a light hand (hurts way less, and hardly any swelling). Ask the shop you are going who is the best with a light hand. :)
No sun or extreme amount of water OR SHAVING on your tattoo.

You will be fine, and I love your design!! DO IT!!!! I want pics please. :)
