Dessert

Hi all, I'm relatively new to the forums here, and have never posted on this one, so I thought I'd say hi first!  Our wedding is in October and we've already covered a lot of the main vendors, but are still working on a few, including dessert.

My question is about my dessert ideas.  My fiance and I are huge ice cream people, and most people know this about us, so we want to have an ice cream sundae bar catered as our primary dessert.  However, I also wanted to have the cake cutting tradition but realize people would expect cake if they see us cutting a cake, albeit small.

To cover the cake aspect, I was thinking I could do cake pops with each person's name and table number as escort cards/favors.  I'm not sure if that really covers it though, and if people will still be wanting to cake... I would assume so.  I just don't really want to have three desserts (cake, cake pops and ice cream), so I'm wondering how I should work it out or what I should cut out.  The ice cream is non-negotiable, but the cake pops vs. cake or lack thereof is negotiable.

Should I cut out the cake cutting and just stick with the cake pops and ice cream?  Or does it matter?  Or should I have a small cake for traditional cake cutting, supply sheet cake slices for those who want it, and just do something different for escort cards/favors?

I know that's a lot of questions, but I'm just figuring there's someone out there who has done something similar or has some better ideas, so I thought I'd get some input.

Thanks!

  • Feed each other ice cream and call it good.  My DH would have adored that.

That's a great and really cute idea!  I think that would be perfect, and I feel dumb for not thinking of that, haha.  Thank you!
  • That is a GREAT idea!  I never would have thought of that, either.
  • I like the idea of feeding each other ice cream!  I am also posting to add that a friend had ice cream with toppings as her dessert, but she also had an assortment of mini-desserts (mini brownies, cheesecake bites, etc.) that people could have with their ice cream.  I liked the variety, and it's good for people who don't love ice cream.  Just another idea :)

That's also a very good idea.  Maybe I could place mini desserted near the ice cream bar and people could choose those, and I could forego the cake pops.  I'll do some price checking to help make a decision I guess.  Thanks for the ideas ladies!
  • cake pops are over-rated. Supply some soft chocolate chip cookies and brownies to go along with the ice cream. Who doesn't like an ice cream sandwich or a brownie sundae??

  • If you go with cutting a cake, then have cake--and I vote for "real" cake" (same-quality sheet cake) rather than cake pops--for your guests.

If you go with feeding each other ice cream, there's no need for cake per se.  I really love cake, though, so I'd miss having cake.  Ultimately, though it's your choice, and if you do the mini desserts table near the ice cream bar that PPs suggested, you could add mini cupcakes or petit fours.

If you still want to do a coordinating favor, you could have little boxes as the escort cards and then your guests can pack up a few mini-desserts to take home.
  • Definitely ditch the cake pops! They are overrated and extremely pricey. Also, the few that I've had were not very good.

Personally I'd do a traditional cake cutting with a small cake and have sheet cakes in the kitchen to serve to those that would like cake. You could have your servers ask guests if they'd like ice cream with their cake. You could have a menu of 3 or 4 different gourmet ice creams or gelatos to choose from to accompany your simple vanilla or chocolate cake -to showcase the fancy ice cream, of course!

OR, if ice cream is your big priority then, by all means, have a fantastic sundae bar with all the fixings. Include cookies and brownies or any other mini desserts that would pair well with ice cream. Maybe even a few pies for an a la mode option...

    It all sounds delicious!
