Synthyroid and Weight Gain

Anyone else started gaining weight on synthyroid? I gained like 30lbs since I started it. They have since added Cytomel. Now I feel like a whale. Nothing works. And I am so depressed. I have stretch marks everywhere and am losing my motivation again. I just want to be healthy. Now to add insult to injury, my blood pressure is through the roof and I am borderline diabetic. Frown

Re: Synthyroid and Weight Gain

  • Hmmm, weight gain is not a side effect of Synthroid. In fact, I assume you have it because of an underactive thyroid, so it should actually help you LOSE weight.  What has your doctor said about your weight gain and how you should go about trying to lose?

  • Definitely time to consult a doctor. Maybe you're having an adverse reaction to the medication, but a doctor is the only one who will really be able to help you.

  • These are all symptoms of hypothyroidism. It sounds like you need to talk to your doc about increasing your dose. You could also switch to a different thyroid med like levothyroxine (some people respond better to different med therapy).
  • Levothyroxine is just the generic name for Synthroid.  it's the same medication.

I was on the generic of Synthyroid but it varied my levels way too much.

I am extremely hypothyroid. I had a blood pressure of 90/40 for the longest time, my hair was falling out, dry skin, the works.

I got onto the synthyroid and I started feeling better but I really started packing on the pounds so my doctor added Cytomel to see if that would help. My levels are crazy. She keeps blaming my eatting so I keep a food/exercise log. I have at least stopped gaining weight in the last few days since I stopped taking my meds.

I stopped taking my thyroid meds for a few days (bad I know but my blood pressure was in the 180/90 range and I was getting migraines) and my blood pressure went down to normal.

I think it may be a poor reaction to something in the Synthyroid. I was reading about an all natural medication that contains both T3 and T4 called Armoir. I read online about some people having the same reaction I am but did not know if any of you ladies would be one of them.

Thanks. I made an appointment for 2 weeks from now. I hope I get sorted out soon.

  • I'm on Levoxyl which is actually the brand name of levothyroxine. Generic thyroid drugs in particular are notoriously "bad" for levels -- I'd say switch it up or double-check that they don't have you on a generic with a weird filler.
