Invite Wording for Dr. Fiance

Hey guys,

Do you know if you include Dr. in the body of the invite if the bride or groom is one?

  • I don't believe this is included on the invitation any more than you would list him as Mr., Gen., Rev., or whatever else he might be.  You don't refer to yourself on the invitation as Miss So-and-So, right?
Whoever said it was supposed to be happily ever after is a big fat liar.
  • After more research, and according to Emily Post (haha), it looks like you usually do write Mr. in front of the groom's name on the invite.  And my original question was because I thought I heard somewhere that if the bride or groom did have a professional title such as Dr. Gen. Rev. you do include it.  It's scary getting these things printed... it's like it's written in stone and can't be changed!

  • My fiance is a doctor and yes we did have his say Dr. Fiance on our invite. But I have heard that you only include doctor as the title if they are a medical doctor. If you have a PhD then I have heard you do not use Dr. as the title.

My dad is also a doctor and he is on the invite as Dr. Dad. I figure all of our mail comes with the title Dr for my fiance so I just decided to keep it that way. Plus all of the vendors we have used put Dr. Fiance on the documents. One of our vendors found out my fiance was a doctor and told me that he will be referred to as Dr. Fiance by all vendors. Also when the minster/other type of person performing the ceremony annouces the couple they say Dr. and Mrs. Lastname.

  • Thanks for this!  So helpful.  My dad's a dr too!  That's really funny.

  • Traditionally formatted invitations give a title to the man and not to the woman. I rarely see invitations like that and haven't for decades. Personally I find that offensive (that the parents and the man deserve the honor of a title and the woman doesn't).

I would either give both of you titles and full names (including his Doctor title, written out, not abbreviated) or neither.

What if the bride is a Dr.? Does the Annoouncement read as follows:

Dr.. Brides Name to Mr. Grooms Name.
  • Traditionally the man gets a title and the bride doesn't, but nowadays it seems like its up to you. Really though, if you use the title it should be spelled out. So instead of Dr. For your fiancé or for your dad you should write Doctor. Only Mr, Ms and Mrs get abbreviated. Everything else is spelled out. :)
  • Thanks, everyone!

  • FI and I are both doctors and we didn't include our titles on the invitation.  Having your first/middle/last name and then your FI being Dr. first/middle/last name comes across as really prentious IMO, or even the idea like PP said that the man & parents get a title, but the bride doesn't is a little irritating.  It's 2012, not 1950.

I guess just on a personal note - people know that you are a doctor.  While I agree that we've earned the right to use the title, and should be proud to use it, I don't use it every single time in every single situation because I feel like in some situations it comes across as kind of snobbish, like "Hey, I'm just reminding you that I'm an important DOCTOR!"  I get that vibe when I read the invitation wording where the bride doesn't have a title but not only does the man have a title, he's a DOCTOR!

Just my 2 cents.  I'd ask your FI what he prefers, our preference was to leave the Dr. titles out.

  • Thanks for the feedback, Auroras.  I think that part of the reason including the Dr. came up in the first place was because he just graduated from medical school in May.  I was too proud of him to feel like it was pretentious, but I definitely hear what you are saying.  We'll talk it over again.   It seems that the feedback is pretty split between including it and not.  Thanks again.

</div><div>This.  I am a doctor and not including my title on the invitations or any other wedding related stationary.  Also, half of my bridesmaids are doctors and we're not using titles for them either.
