Getting in Shape

Nutrisystem?

Hi everyone. I am new to this board. If at all I usually post on my local board but I figured this was a better place for this topic.

On on my fourth day of nutrisystem I'm doing okay but am having a few challenges with it -  like that the food is really salty and that most of it is pretty gross - last night by the end of the day I was so umimpressed by the food I actually skipped dinner which I realize is prob not a good idea.

I want to lose 15 pounds before my May 8th wedding - excersise has helped some but not as much as I have hoped.

I was just just wondering if any of you have tried nurtsystem and what your thoguhts were on it.

TIA!
Lisa

Re: Nutrisystem?

  • skip the 234 a month payment and start the special k diet if you only waant to lose 15 pounds, you can lose that in 2 or less months!
  • Or forget the special K diet, which is NOT a healthy way to lose weight, and do things the right way- cutting calories and upping exercise.

The only reason nutrisystem might work is that it's limiting your portions/calories by forcing you to eat that food. You can cook or buy food that tastes better and is not expensive....just make sure it has the same calorie count, and the same weight loss should apply. And you might actually be able to stick with it and keep the weight loss, if you LIKE what you eat!

As for the special K diet, of course you lose weight- you are eating only cereal and granola bars. But of course you can't keep that up forever, and as soon as you start eating real food again, you'll just gain the weight back!
  • Please dont just fall back on "fad" diets (nutrisystem, special K, etc).

Your best chance of success in the short AND long term is to adopt a healthy style of living - knowing what you need to fuel your body, how many calories as well as grams of fat, carbs and protein, is your first step towards being healthy for the rest of your life. If you control what goes in you can make sure you are not getting too much sodium, trans fats, sugars, and other bad things.
  • I 100% agree with prior posts ... except for the post suggesting Special K. Yes, you might lose weight, but your sugar will probably be through the roof from eating cereal, cereal bars, and sugary shakes all the time. Why would you want to pay for bad food or eat cereal all the time when you can easily make better things yourself. Check out eatbetteramerica.com. They have amazing recipies with "healthified" versions of favorite foods.

  • If you like the structure of being on a "program," I highly recommend Weight Watchers.

If you want to just keep track of calories in and calories out, sparkpeople is a great free website that also gives you exercise ideas.

Here's a great website for educating yourself about weight loss: http://weightloss.about.com/

Losing 15 pounds before your wedding can be done in a healthy way that doesn't include eating salty foods or foods you don't like!

  • my MOH used nutrisystem and lost a lot of weight... she also spent a fortune and was miserable.  and then as soon as the wedding was over she gained the weight back and just told me she gained more than she originally lost back ( i think she looks fab no matter what!) ... i think the one good thing about NS is that it shows you more reasonable portion sizes. when she started i remember her saying that portions were SO small... in reality they were the right sizes.  WW teaches you this as well. I personally am on WW and think its amazing.  I would highly recommend it. it's also MUCH cheaper and you can eat normal foods.

  • Thank you so much everyone! Great advice. I am going to stick with NS for atleast 2 months because I already paid for it. I do need help with portion control so it is good  for that. I have tried weight watchers but I am so busy during the day that it was easy for me to just scrap it and not count points - ns is a little bit eaier for me to track. At least ns does have bars so I can eat that kind of thing on the go. Last night I also ate "normal food" that was the same calorie and fat content as my ns meal but had less sodium. Hopefully after I get a grasp on what poriton sizes I should be eating I can eat real food and at least maintain most of my weightloss. I have been running 4 times a week so that will help me maintian as well!

Thanks guys! I will keep you posted!
  • Save the nutrisystem containers and buy a food scale so you can cook your own meals and measure the portion size!

  • oh, that is a great idea!
  • I was on it a few years ago.  I did it for about a month and lost about 10 pounds without changing my activity.  The bad part was that the food tasted like crap and I was broke from buying their expensive food then adding the additional items to it.  I find it easier and cheaper to just eat a well balanced diet of lean protein, whole grain carbs, fruits & veggies, skim milk products, and a little healthy fats.  Just use sparkpeople.com to determine your calories you should be eating and then track them all there too!  It's a little more planning on your part than Nutrisystem, but I think it's well worth it!!  When my 2nd months food from Nutrisystem shipped, I sent it back for a refund!!  Good Luck with your weight loss! :)
  • thank you holly. maybe i will send back the second month.
