Reception Style...

Hey ya'll, I need to pick your brains! My FH and i just got in a bit of a tiff over the style of recpetion.  I really want a night wedding (7:00 pm) with a low key dessert reception and a dance with big band and swing music: something a little out of the norm for my area and unique and fun, yet still classy.  My FH, on the other hand, wants the traditional 4:00 pm wedding, reception with a big meal, and a dance with classic rock.  In addition, I'm trying to juggle two very different family type: my family is conservative while his is a little less so.  We're both very stubborn and at this point have come to an impasse about the type of reception we should plan...Does anyone have any suggestions for compromise!?!?

Re: Reception Style...

  • Can you compromise by having the 7pm ceremony with dessert reception and classic rock music dancing?  Rock and classic rock would probably be more popular with your guests anyway, and you'd probably have more people on the dance floor to songs they know rather than big band/swing music that most people don't know how to dance to.

  • Isn't 7:00pm a little early for a wedding with a dessert reception?  You need to allow time for your guests to eat before your wedding (and get dressed and travel to your site).  If you go with a dessert reception, I would start it a little later.

You didn't mention it, but do you have budget constraints?  A full sit-down meal would be more expensive than a dessert reception.  Personally, I would prefer the full sit-down meal, but understand that not everyone has the budget for that.

7pm is after the dinner hour for most people. Either way, mention it on the reception card that it is desserts only and your guests will know to eat ahead of time.
  • 7pm is dinner time for alot of people.  If you are not serving them dinner than you need to do it later.  Especially if you are doing dessert only.  I would also state it on the invitation so that people eat first.

If you are adamant about 7, then I would at least make it an appetizer reception.  And go heavy on the app's.

If I went to your 7pm wedding and you didnt serve me dinner, I would be hungry, and therefore upset.

Keep in mind too that if you are serving alcohol and no food other than dessert, people are going to get drunk soon.  And if you are anticipating big band dancing, they are going to work up an appetite.  Please feed them......
