Half Marathon advice

I would really like to run a half marathon this summer.  The one I am going to sign up for is on June 2, so I have about 19-20 weeks to train for it.  The only running training plan that I have ever followed was C25K two years ago.

Where I am at now:  I currently run between 10-15 miles a week (January has been a bit less due to a tiny injury).  A 5k is an easy run for me, and I can push myself on long runs up to 7 miles.   I have been running regularly for over a year, so I think I have a pretty strong running base.

I know there are some other girls (kwitherington) planning on running a half this spring/summer, so let me know what plan you are following and when you plan to get started.  Or if you have ran a half before, what worked best for you?

Re: Half Marathon advice

  • I second the novice 2.  I pretty much got half way through it until my lungs won.  I'm going to get restarted this spring.  Hal is awesome.
  • I "third" the advice for HH Novice 2 if that's where you are at with your running. I was about where you are at. I started "training" 12 weeks out and the program was pretty comfortable for me. I ended up running the full 13.1 the week before on accident because my mile marker was covered with leaves but I liked it because then I knew I could do it.

I made a calender for the 12 weeks and kept it on my fridge to help me keep track of what I should be running. This helped if I had to move my runs around a bit.

Good luck! Halfs are really fun :)

  • Well it looks like I should give HH Novice 2 a try!  I'll probably start training about 15 months out in case I need to repeat a week or anything.  And I know that a trip to Vegas in May is in the works and that is bound to disrupt my running plans.

@kwith: I will probably add a few interval and tempo runs too.  I am trying to improve my 5k time.  The intermediate plan looks really intense!

@acaponi: I think I will make a calendar to keep myself on track, thanks!

  • runnersworld.com also has free half training plans for beginner, intermediate, and advanced runners. You can decide where you are. I've done the beginner and intermediate plans with good results.

I traveled a lot when I was training. It's NBD if you miss a few days, just make sure you do your long run each week. I made sure I'd do it the day before I left on a trip because I knew there was no way in hell I'd do it when I was gone haha.

Which Half are you doing? I just noticed you are from Detroit. I did the Free Press Half last year.
