Blue Nile platinum

Why is it so cheap?

We went to several jewelers in Jacksonville and were quoted $1500-$2000+ for a 3mm platinum band for my FI. Everyone was trying to sway us into 18kt white gold because of the cost of platinum right now but we want platinum.

A quick look on Blue Nile and I found the same (??) band for $510! http://www.bluenile.com/wedding-ring-platinum_4429

What gives? Are jewelers really charging that much overhead? Why doesn't the price of platinum vary on Blue Nile like the jewelers say it does? I see it is the same quality (950 pt) so I'm assuming this is the same ring but for much much less. Obviously I want this ring to last him forever so if there is a reason I should spend 4x more on a ring from the jeweler please tell me!!

Who knows what goes on at jewelry stores. I do know the price of gold fluctuates, but that much of a difference is ridiculous.

I have heard nothing but good things about Blue Nile, so I just say go for it.

  • Depends what the platinum is mixed with. Or, so I'm guessing.

Though, I agree, I've heard good things about Blue Nile.

  • Nothing is wrong with Blue Nile.  It's the largest online jewelry retailer, that's why prices can be lower than other stores.  I have my platinum engagement ring from there and love it.  I plan to get my wedding band there as well.

  • Blue Nile also buys in bulk; they get a lower price because they buy hundreds and hundreds of the rings at one time.

I own several pieces of jewelry from Blue Nile and have had only wonderful experiences.
  • Ok! This is what I wanted to hear ;) It just seems too good to be true! I just fell in love with a wedding band on there for me PLUS it's on sale so I think we're going to order soon!

  • I've purchased from BN before and I thought their serfvice was great.

$1500-2000 sounds high for a plain 3mm band.   I've seen 6mm platinum bands for about $1300.

  • BN is great! My FI bought my E-ring there and they have excelent customer service. I've sent my ring in to get sized smaller and cleaned and nothing but great service!
