Shapewear

I'm heading on vacation next weekend with another couple.  I'd like to do something about smoothing out my flabby bits as we're probably going to some nice dinners and whatnot.  Does anyone have any recs for some shapewear that isn't mindblowingly expensive, that won't make me sweat like crazy (so breatheable), and that works well?  I'm a size 16-ish, and the main area I'd be trying to hold back would be my stomach and back fat.

If I wanted to hear the pitter-patter of little feet, I'd put shoes on the cat. image

Re: Shapewear

  • I wish I did know. I've tried all manner of Spanx and they all just make me look and feel like a stuffed sausage. And they all make the back fat worse except for the full length slip.

  • I don't know if it's the best, but the Target by me always has a ton of options as far as length, what you want covered, etc.  I like that everything is all out in the open where I can test the material, breathability, etc.

    That's probably not too helpful.

I actually cheaped out and got a Target brand thing for the wedding. I loved it.
  • Me, too.

Shiit, I get everything at Target lately.
  • Try the Target 'Assets' brand - very much like Spanx but way cheaper.  I like the high-waisted gizmo under dresses or skirts.

  • I've used Spanx and the Target brand and I liked both, but after nearly breaking a finger while putting on Spanx, I've sworn off shapewear and if anyone doesn't like my lumps or bumps, they can eat me.
  • I have a Yummie Tummie tank, and has more of a smoothing effect than a "sucks the fat in" type of effect with me. However, I figured it was worth a mention. I wear mine as a cami all the time under shirts.
  • The Assets brand from Target is great!
I have a pair of black opaque tights that have a tummy control top that goes all the way up to just under your bra.
AMAZING and much easier than spanx.

  • I second tights that go all the way up. I found some at target, I forget the brand but they were about $7 (?) and really keep everything smooth. They are called like "cellulite be gone" or something equally awful. I still swear by my high waisted power panty spanx, but they are a bit pricey. I always buy mine new on Ebay though, so that might save you money. I have heard really good things about assets though as well.
  • I wear one of these nearly every day.  I think I have like 10 of them.  They're comfy because I can wear my regular bra and they go up higher in the back to hold all of those rolls in too.  And they're pretty inexpensive.

  • HA, apparently I WAS helpful.

Target also has the very best tights ever. You know the $5 ones in the little rolls. BEST ONES.
  • I've bought Flexees from Kohls before and despite the good reviews, they really suck.  They constantly roll down and the leg openings are too tight.  I'll have to try the Target ones... had no idea they were supposed to be so good!

  • I have a pair of Spanx-like things that are from Dress Barn, and I love them. I don't feel sweaty and gross in them, and they do a great job at smoothing things out.

  • I used to like the ones from Target except that the seam that runs up the front was visible with a couple of dresses that were of a clingly fabric, so I tried a shapewear from Avenue, a plus size store. It's wonderful because the front panel doesn't have the seam that Target's Assets have and they're by far the most comfortable shapewear ever. Unfortunately, I don't have any advice for an equivalent for anyone smaller than an XL size though (I'm a size 16/18 and bought their XL/2X).

  • Shapewear is great during the winter, but it's just too damn hot for the summer. You can cut the legs off of a pair of control top pantyhose. It's cheap and it wworks pretty well.
