DIY Distaster.. :(

I tried my first DIY today. I tried to mimick this..

We currently live in a smaller town with just a pretty poor Hobby Lobby, I was so excited though and I set out with the FI to find my supplies this morning. I got a regular unity candle set (9.99 on sale), some simple lace-like stuff, some spray adhesive like a worker recommended, ribbon, and a charm. The unity candle looked kind of cheap when I opened it up. I was kind of disappointed in it, but whatever. Continue... I started cutting out the lace and went to wrap it around the candle. It just didn't look right. I don't know if the colors were off, but I just didn't like the way it looked. It was the only lace (it wasn't even really lace) that the store had. The whole thing just didn't look like what I wanted or what I was going for. I'm so disappointed. I just don't think I'm cut out for the DIY thing. I have such a high standard or a picture in my head and it never will turn out like that! Help!?

  • do you have any pics you can share with us?

  • No I didn't take any. I didn't really finish it because I think I'm going to take back the stuff..

  • I'm sure "disaster" is a gross overstatement. It probably doesn't look as bad as you think.

That being said, I have given up on DIY. I'm quite picky/perfectionist and things never end up looking the way I want. And I usually drive myself insane in the process.

FI and I have made the decision to just spend the $ and spare ourselves the headache.

However, that unity candle thing is gorgeous! Post pics of your attempt if you can :)
And don't be so hard on yourself!

  • I understand where your dilemma comes in and I would also have gotten disappointed.  If you want to give it another shot, I'd look online for some better lace that matches more with what you had in mind.

Do you by chance have a picture of how yours turned out?  I could help give you better insight on what to do (if you want to try again) if I had something to go off of.

Good luck and just keep trying.  I'm sure you'll get it.

  • If you still want to try it, I'd recommend buying at least the lace online. I've browsed this website:

    http://www.laceheaven.com/default.aspx

I'm planning to attach lace to some candle holders. I haven't ordered anything yet, but I like their prices.

  • I am ordering our candles from a place in Amish Country- they ship.
It's pretty amazing, and you may like them too.

Check them out. They are amazing. When all else fails, recruit a friend or a knottie that does these things well. :)

  • Thanks guys for your support. I think my picky-ness might be my problem! It might in the end be cheaper for me to buy things already made instead of re-doing things until I get it halfway to the way I like it (I'd rather buy something I really love!). My next DIY is going to be moss letter (SURELY you can't mess those up). I bought the moss today also and I'm waiting on letters to come in the mail.

Those Amish candles are really pretty! Our Chapel is providing a candelabra and I'm not sure if those would fit though..

<div>Maybe try to contact them and see if they can custom one? They do that for the Catholic candles.</div>
