Near Miss X2

Earlier this week I got a call from our pianist who I had booked back in the spring, an acquaintance of our ceremony vocalist.  She was asked to do a wedding at her church on the same date as ours.  We went over my timeline and realized it wasn't possible.  A bit later, she called back to ask if I would mind if she substituted another pianist in her place because she really wanted to do the wedding at her church.  I said that was fine, but she should be aware that my programs are already printed and I would have to reprint them.  Two hours later she called back and said she felt terrible about the whole thing, she would do our wedding.  Phew, near miss number one.

Just now I got a call from our baker, she has to close the bakery business has been too slow to maintain a store front.  I was wondering she didn't cash my check after our final meeting a week ago.  She is still willing to make the cake and deliver it, but it she wanted to give me a heads up.  I appreciated her call and her honesty, but that was another very close call!

  • I would meet with the baker again and make absolute sure she can still make your cake.

I coordinate weddings part-time, and had a similar situation a few weeks ago.  A bride booked a bakery months ago, and since then, they had to close.  The owner agreed to fulfill all outstanding orders, however, the quality was completely sub-par.  She wouldn't answer her phone a week prior to the wedding, she was late the day of, the cake looked like she had cranked it out that morning, and the topper fell off of the cake twice (not because it was too heavy, but because she didn't make the icing stiff enough and the cake was somewhat crumbly).  I had to work some magic to fix it, so the bride wouldn't notice.  This woman was a very well respected business owner in our town, but because she no longer had a bakery, she seemed to just not care anymore.

It is not my intention to scare you, because I know this is not the case for everyone.  I just wanted to emphasize the importance of possibly meeting with her again (in person, if possible) to make sure everything is still good-to-go!

  • Thanks, I appreicate the heads up.  My cake is not simple - at all!  If she doens't put in 100% it's going to be a disaster.

  • Wow! What a heart attack! I'm glad both wound up with a back-up plan, and hopefully that's that
