How far ahead did you have to book your location??

Hello! I'm new to the board as FI hasn't even asked yet but we've been talking. I think we've decided on having a DW after attending a relatives "small" family only wedding of 300 people but he's mentioned that we would have a short engagement due to cultural traditions.

My question is how far out did you have to book your location? I'm expecting maybe having 4-6 months max and am trying to get a handle on as much as possible before hand.

  • Welcome to the DW board!!!  My wedding isn't until 2014, and we haven't booked a venue, but there are a lot of great ladies on here that are in the middle of planning things. Hopefully they will be able to give you some tips on time lines etc.

Good luck with your planning :)

  • We booked our venue in January 2011 and we just got married last month.  We knew what resort we wanted and since our resort only does one wedding a day our TA suggested that we just go ahead and book the day we wanted.  I am glad we did because the days at my resort filled up fast and we had no problem getting the exact day we wanted!  Good luck!

  • I booked mine a little under a year out. Depending on where you go, you might have some trouble booking this close, but if you're not set on a specific date or time, you should be able to find something that works for you! Good luck!

  • I booked a little over a year in advance...if you won't have that much time, you should pick several different dates, times and resorts in case one is booked you have backups!  Don't get too attached to a date/location b/c it would be a big disappointment if you can't get it...due to my FI and I work schedules and wanting the wedding to be on a Saturday, we HAD to get the date we chose so I am glad we were able to secure our date :-)

  • Most couples book a year to half a year out. I kinda pushed it and booked at eight months out and got lucky! Me and my FI can only get married in the winter or summer due to our schedules and a whole year and a half engagement is tooooo long for me! lol

  • Thanks guys! We should be fairly flexible on dates and actually during the week would probably work better for most of the party, so maybe it won't be as bad as I was anticipating. Right now we are thinking Hawaii or Tahiti but due to religious reasons I think Hawaii will be were we start looking for locations.

  • We officially booked at 10 months if I remember rightn might have been 9 lol
  • Welcome and congrats on the engagement!!

I booked mine I think 10 months out too...We're getting married in November and I THINK we booked venues in January...might have been early Feb though
  • we booked our venue last month, so 10 months in advance and I had to hustle because another bride wanted my date. They only do one wedding a day there.

  • I booked about a year out...and since my venue does only one wedding a day...we couldn't get a Fri, Sat, or Sunday, so we're getting married on a Monday!!! :)

  • We booked Oahu about a year out, but I think that as Hawaii doesn't have AI's, booking somewhere for a mid week wedding will help you keep a lot of options open on shorter notice.  We got married on a Monday in March and didn't see any other weddings that day.  When we were there the August before, we saw usually 1 wedding each day at ne of the hotels along the beach.

  • Hi, I'm a newbie too. We're getting married in Vegas next Memorial Day so we had to move quick! We started booking vendors in May, so a year. Good luck and congrats!
  • I hear you on the long engagement...I will be engaged 4 months shy of 2 years by the time we are married but you know the time really did fly!  Right now I'm engaged 13 months and the wedding is almost 7 months away, time is passing too fast lol!  Although I wanted to be his Mrs. right away (even discussed going to the courts to get legally married the month he proposed) I feel good that we waited lol!

  • the place we are booking will not book any further than a year out. So we are officially unofficially booked. Most places want your buisness so they are willing to work with you. We want to get married in August next year and although its over a year out and they cant book us until August first, they took our name, date and time we want marked it down and said they would call us as soon as the August booking began. Although I will be following up Aug. 1st weather they call or not. My point is, most will work with you! It all depends on the place and how flexible you are with your date.
