The appropriate time for engagement announcement?

My FI and I just got engaged 2 weeks ago. I think it would be a good idea to put an announcement in the local paper sense we live in such a small town. The thing is we are waiting until after college to get married, so it is a two year wait. Is it to soon to put an announcement in the paper if the date is so far away? When would be the appropriate time to make an announcement?

    I waited til after college too, and we did not do a newspaper announcement until about 6 months before our wedding. We used an engagement picture for it.

    I'm in the same boat as you right now. My FI and I just got engaged in August, but we are waiting until after college, which will be in two years as well, to place an announcement in the paper. Since our wedding probably won't be for another two years, we just announced our engagement through our wedding website.  Once we set a date, we are going to put it in the paper. 

    Congratulations and enjoy every minute of it ;)
