Vows

Anyone else out there writing their own vows? I've been working on mine and keep changing them. I'm trying to find a balance between serious and sarcastic/funny (b/c that's how FI and I are w/ one another).

Anyone want to share theirs?

Re: Vows

  • We wrote our own. We still wanted them to be similar so I wrote mine and he kept his as a similar format. We really wanted them to be tailored to us but also short and sweet.

I, A , take you A to be my friend, my confidant, my hero and my husband.

You give me the strength to believe in myself, you never fail to make me laugh, and you challenge me every day to be a better person.

I love your sense of adventure, your loyalty, and your smile.

I promise to always be honest and faithful,

to laugh with you and cook for you,

and to love you, without bound.

I am so proud from this day forward to be your wife.

  • i couldn't figure out how to incorperate funny into my vows, so i went the serious and heartfelft route:

David: you are my one and only, my first and last, my forever and always. I still can’t believe i get to spend the rest of my life with you. I don’t understand what you saw in me but i know it was something worth fighting for. You pursued me and that’s how i know this marriage will be great...you continue to make me feel wanted and special. So on this day, exactly 4 years after our first off campus but unofficial date i make these vows to you. I vow to honour and be faithful to you for the rest of our lives. I vow to make our home a place you are sorry to leave each morning. To put your needs above my own and fully support you in everything you do. I vow to never take you for granted and to continue saying i love you every day.

    I love that line.

    Right now I have this:

    <font color="#000000">C,

I am so happy and proud to <em><strong>finally</strong> </em>be standing here with you on our wedding day. You are truly my best friend. I want to thank you for all of the love you give me, for accepting me as I am and for always standing by my side. I promise that I will always do the same for you. I also promise to pretend to watch football with you (even though we both know I'm only in it for the food) and to nap <em>quietly </em>during UFC and golf.

Fifteen years ago, when we first met, I knew that one day we would be standing here together, just like this. It's been a long road and there were some bumps along the way, but we made it through together. We can make it through anything. I love you.

I've only shown this to my sister, our pastor and one of my friends. This is the second draft and I'm considering tweaking them a little more. If I tweak as I type them I'll put the change in bold. Just to preface, FI and I have been together for a long time.

Thirteen is supposedly an unlucky number, but I will always consider it my luckiest number. Thirteen years ago I met you, and it was love not long after.
We've already weathered a few storms together and even had a short rough patch, but we made it through and came back to where we belong.
You make me smile and laugh every day. You're there to comfort me when I cry, even when they're happy tears. I can't imagine my life without you in it.
J, I take you as my husband and present myself to you as your wife. I promise to share each day with you, each night and each morning. I promise to support you as you reach for your dreams and to be there to catch you if you fall short. I promise to be with you in times of plenty and in times of need.
I will walk with you as we contine life's journey together. Anywhere I go in life, I want you to come too. I love you more than I can say. Love me, that's all I ask of you.

I'm a huge Phantom of the Opera fan and so I worked in some phrasing from my favorite song. I'm open to critique though if its on the wording on one of the sections from Phantom I probably won't change it.

    Edit for spelling typo

I think they're great! The only thing I would change is "Thirteen is supposedly an unlucky number, but I will always consider it my luckiest." I would drop the word "number" there b/c it's repetitive.

I haven't shown my vows to anyone yet, so I am also open to constructive criticism.

Sounds like you guys have a similar love story to ours.  :)

<div>I'll consider that. I hadn't thought of it as repetitive. When I read them to myself I put a little bit of tonal emphasis on "luckiest number"</div>

  • We're not writing our own but reading yours made me tear up!  Those are so lovely.
  • We are not writing our own, we are doing a "loving cup" ceremony and we decided the words to that worked for vows
I recognize you as my soul friend
And ask that you become a part of me
With you I have lost all fear
And found courage for the future
    I have learned to love
And to let myself be loved
    With you my soul friend
I am understood, I am home.
  • I've never heard of a loving cup ceremony. What is that?

  • The purpose of the loving cup in a wedding ceremony is for the couple to share their first drink together as husband and wife and to show the uniting of their two families.  This is a special moment for the couple to toast their love, devotion, and friendship.

    We like wine :)
  • Wow, your vows are all so beautiful!  We are writing ours as well...but neither of us have started.  Although FI says he's going to copy the lyrics from the Adam Sandler song from the Wedding Singer, I Wanna Grow Old With You. haha

I think the cupping ceremony is a cute idea!  I'd be interested to seeing it in person.
  • We're not writing our own, but I love the vows our officiant came up with.
    F,
you are my companion in life
    and my one true love.
    I will treasure our friendship
and love you today, tomorrow, and forever.
    I will trust and honor you;
I will laugh and cry with you.
With unfailing love I will stand by you
through the best and the worst,
through the difficult and the easy.
As I have given you my hand to hold
so I give you my life to keep.
    So help me God.

  • I hadn't thought of writing ours. I just assumed since we were getting married in the Church we'd do the traditional ones... But just a stab at free handing here.. Justin, I want to start by saying thank you. Thank you for believing in me and always being there for me. You are my rock and also my soft place to land. I am so happy to finally be standing here with you today to make this commitment before God, our family and our friends. I vow today that I will always be faithful and true. That I will be there for you in both good and bad times as you have been for me. I will be there to laugh and cry with you, to share the rest of my life with you and make memories with you. As I make these promises today I give you my heart and I know it will always be safe with you. I love you. .....I could probably write them 100 different ways but that's what came off the top of my head in less than 5 minutes...

  • Here's mine...

I vow to love you passionately now and forever. I will cherish you no matter what obstacles we face. I vow to be your shelter in times of struggle and one you can turn to for support. I promise you will never face your worries alone, always remaining your partner through moments of joy and heartache. Above all else I will remain your best friend, weave your dreams into my own and cherishing your hopes as my own.

On a lighter note, I promise you I will remind you  about your keys, wallet and phone before leaving any location. I promise to revel in the simple moments like falling asleep in your arms.  I promise to chase you, never run away (at least no farther than the next room). I will never give up or take you for granted. I promise I will remind you why you fell in love with me and always remind you I’m crazy about you.

B, from the bottom of my heart, I promise you ME. Forever.
