We can get it for about $35 here. I love that champagne.
What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests. Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
First rule of thumb: Technically champagne only comes from a specific region in France. Any bottle of bubbly that calls itself champaign but isn't from Champagne (ie. Andre) is usually not very good (since its makers are scummy enough to steal the name of something they are not).
That being said, there are tons of great sparkling wines that aren't champagne and that are very reasonably priced. I recommend Proseco, which is an Italian sparkling wine that is very respectable. I prefer it because it is slightly sweeter than champagne (which I find to be a little too dry) and less expensive for a good bottle.
DH hates champagne. He even refused it at the wedding. I normally have to buy half bottles if I want to drink it myself. Luckily I know people who can get me the half bottles of Veuve.

Generally it's illegal to put champagne on the bottle when it's not from that specific area in France. You can however refer to the method of producing the wine itself.
ooh thanks for the tips!! I love a good Spanish Cava, which we had at my wedding, but the hostess specifically asked for champagne so I think we will stick to that. Sending Mike to the store with a list of the ones you mentioned to price! Thanks!!
I brought some Martini & Rossi's Asti Spumante to my brother's wedding ceremony (it was recommended by 2 knotties) and it went over really well. It's very sweet and yummy, and was <$15 for a large bottle.
EDIT - Asti Spumante is a sparkling wine, but I can't tell the difference between that and champagne.

I 100% agree with you on that. I do not get why people like it so much...

I would just ask the clerk at the liquor store if you're unsure. I got mine at Kroger, and it was about $8.

If you're lucky, you can get the bottle that looks really cool:

That said, I bought a bottle of Martini & Rossi Asti for us tonight - I was in the mood for something sweeter.
