Running Shoes

Hi y'all, I'm new to this board and needing ideas for running shoes. I need some new ones in a bad kind of way. The last pair I bought hurt my non-arches SO bad! Needing brands for a flat footed gal. Any ideas? Thanks! :)

Re: Running Shoes

  • I have flat feet as well and I have the best luck with Puma sneakers.

  • Hi!

The best thing you can do is hit up your local sports equipment and/or running related store.  Have the employees give you recommendations for your type of foot and type of running you plan on doing and try on as many pairs as you need to.  Do you have a Fleet Feet store in your area?  The one in my area actually has a little track where you can test run the shoes.

  • i really like Asics.  They may be a little uncomfortable at first..like any other shoe, but otherwise I love mine!
  • I DEFINITELY recommend going to a running store (Runner's World or the like).  They'll make you get on a treadmill or walk around the store so they can see your style and recommend a good shoe for you.

I have Brooks Adrenaline.  I used to get shin splints all the time before I invested in good shoes.  Now, no problems! :)  I just need to replace them regularly.

    HTH!
  • I second going to a running store.  They will look at the shape of you feet and your gait and suggest shoes.  You can usually then try out the shoes that they are suggesting.

  • I also recommend getting professionally fitted.  Like you, I have CRAZY flat feet (like, pancake flat) and I went to a local running store to get fitted and they hooked me up with something that worked.  I was in Nikes for a while, but recently switched to Gel Kayano 18s and those do the trick for me.
  • I'll be the like 4th person here to tell you to go to a running store. I didn't do it until recently and it really makes a huge difference for me. No more shin splints and numb toes!
  • Ditto everyone that you need to go to a running specific store (not just a Diick's) and get "diagnosed."  They may cost more than you like, but believe me, getting clearance sneaks, not worth it.

HA! TK won't let me write the store name properly.
  • The best pair of shoes I've ever had for running are the Nike FreeRuns. They are amazing!

I bought some cheap Asics back during the summer that were too small (but felt fine to me) and now I've paid $200+ in podiatrist visits, procedures, and meds. Basically my big toes were enduring trauma from repetitive striking against the top/front of the shoe. I didn't have enough room in my toebox, and my big toe nails have stopped growing. The cuticles/nail base was infected...you get the idea.

Just last week I went and got properly fitted. They had me run to see if I pronate, which I do, and they picked a shoe with a deep and wide toe box. I tried several pairs/brands and picked a pair of Mizunos for about $115. If I had done that in the first place, I would not have wasted the time and money and pain I've experienced from the cheap too small Asics. My toes are getting better, but I'm also on an anti-inflammatory so that could be part of the solution too.

  • I run, but not a lot (2-3 miles at a time, 3 times a week or so in the spring, summer, and fall), and I've fallen in love with Ryka sneakers - supposedly they're better designed for women or something, idk, I just like them.

  • I've been fitted before, and it helps tremendously.  I have super flat feet as well, and I recently bought K-Swiss tubes, and love them.  And they come in really pretty colors too (not that THAT is a good reason to pick a running shoe, but they seriously are comfy, and the color choices are awesome, so it's a win-win).  Famousfootwear has pretty decent prices on them.  :)
The shoes I had before my tubes were some Brooks Adrenaline, and I was really happy with them as well.  They were super supportive for running and for lateral motion that I do in Zumba.  The Tubes are the same way--great to run in, great to Zumba in.

  • Getting properly fitted is the key to finding the best shoes for you. I personally love Asics because I have a really high arch, but everyone's feet are different.

  • Please do not ever ever ever just buy a pair of running shoes bc someone recommends the brand. Also don't go straight to "minimalist" shoes like Nike Frees bc the low heel-toe drop will cause serious injuries (calves, Achilles, shin splints etc) I'll be person # 6438284 to tell you to go to a local running store and get fitted. Fleet Feet is a national chain that most cities have and that will fit you. Also, don't ever use your running shoes for anything but running. I spent a ton of money on my pairs of running shoes and so will you, do might as well get as many miles as possible out of them! Seriously though, shoes are the key. I hated running until I got fitted (and also learned more about proper running mechanics), and now I've got one marathon under my belt, and 2 half marys scheduled over the next 3 months.
