Name Change- Did they take your marriage certificate?

I FINALLY went to the SS office on Monday (what a scary place). And they kept my marriage certificate.. Then I read online when you go to change your drivers license, you need the marriage certificate.. Um, I don't have it!

What has your experiance been??

    I dont' know if protocol changed since 09 when I did mine but they did NOT keep it.  I had to show it to them but they gave it right back to me and then my new card came in the mail about a week later.  The Passport folks did keep mine but I got it back in the mail eventually.

    That is odd.... I went about a month ago and they didn't keep mine!  However, I actually brought in the wrong copies (for some reason we never received our certified marriage certificate, so had to request an addl one).... but they processed and sent me my new card anyways.

    You can request an extra copy of your stamped/certified marriage certificate from the county that you registered for your marriage license in and it shouldn't cost you anything!  We reg in Hennipen Cty, FWIW.

    I was in a week or 2 ago and they did not keep mine, either. That sounds very odd to me. Is there any way that you can call the office?

    So strange.. I know they DEFINITELY kept mine... hmm.. I'll call them or Hennepin County and see what they can do. I did search online too and you can get another one right at the HC Service Center. But of course you have to pay for it! Thanks everyone!

    I mailed my paperwork into the SS office instead of going in-including my Marriage license.  They mailed it back to me about 1 1/2 weeks later.  I would probably call and ask about it just in case though.

    That is very strange. No one that I know of has had theirs kept by the SS office. Maybe it was a mistake, like a paper they took in the pile by mistake. Either way, definitely a good idea to contact them.
