registering

So my FI and I are going to register soon (YAY - I've been waiting forever to do this!) and I'm wondering how you all attacked the process.  I'm kind of type A so that's probably why I'm making way too big of a deal about this...but I digress :)

I'm thinking I'm probably going to do some research first about what brand of kitchen supplies that I want but other than that, do I need a plan of attack?  Should I have an idea about the stuff we want at each store before we get there?  I don't want to go in and just register for a whole bunch of crap just because I see it and think it looks fun.  I know I can edit the registry, but I want to have the core of it be what I actually want from the get go.

Am I completely over thinking this (answer: probably)?  What did you all do (or are you planning to do) for your registries?

I definitely did research on certain things (pots and pans, china/dishes, irons, etc.). I couldn't wait to register so I started looking at things online before we went to stores to get an idea. Also, I started out BBB registry online before we went to the store and it was good to know what I already had registered for and if I didn't like how it looked when we went to the store I deleted it and found an alternate. I also was pretty Type A and compared prices of the same product at two different stores and made sure I registered for said product at the store with the cheaper price.

My FI definitely just wanted to scan everything that looked "fun" and I secretly removed those items later :)

We started our registries very early because we knew that family members wanted to use the registries for our engagement party and Christmas gifts (and they did, which has been very nice).  We have not registered for bedding or towels yet because that stuff I guess tends to be pretty seasonal, so we're waiting until summer to add that to our registries.

As for kitchen stuff, we did not research pots and pans because we already knew the brands we wanted.  I did look at things online, but honestly, the most help that we received was from the sales associate at Bloomingdale's.  I was sooo impressed.  She walked around that darn store (went to the home store at Oakbrook) with us for 3 hours.  Never, ever pushy, nice as could be, and was so helpful and knowledgable.  There was also a rep there that day from the brand of pots/pans we registered for who was helpful.  So really, if you get a good sales associate, take advantage of their knowledge of the products the store carries.

We worked off a checklist that we got from BBB and made our own list of what we needed/wanted.  Then we took our list with us when we went to register and went from there.  We also had to do some editing when we got home and looked at our registries online because we started to get a little scanner gun-happy toward the end.

Have fun!  It's tiring but we had a lot of fun.

Yaaay! One of the most exciting parts of planning :)

I didn't do any research before we went.  We just showed up to BB&B and the wedding registry girl was very helpful!  They have a lot of brochures and information that they give you along with the rundown of their products.  We went through and scanned till our little hearts couldn't anymore, and then I went home and added more to the registry.  I even switched out the pots and pans set that I originally registered for with a different set.

My opinion -- don't go overboard researching products just yet.  Go see what is out there in the store and register for what you think looks good and then if you are unsure about something, go home and look online at the reviews (I suggest Amazon, they have pretty legit reviews) and then make changes as necessary.  Good luck, have lots of fun! :)

We did 2 places: Crate and Barrel and BBB. I highly recommend attending on of the registry parties at C&B. We did this first which got FI excited to go to BBB to finish it out. C&B had experts in pots/pans, china, and furniture at the party so we had one on one help with those areas plus you're in the store before it opens so you have the staff's full attention.

I researched a lot before I went. I was on the fence about stainless v. nonstick FOREVER and finally decided stainless was the best option for us. I also went to wedding events at Crate and Barrel and Macy's, which were so much fun and were really helpful! Also, look for a registry list to see what you want, what you have, and what you don't need.

I am obsessed with kitchen things and cooking....and totally hated registering.

I found it extremely overwhelming and exhausting....and almost felt rude registering for some of the things I did.

My MIL doesn't think so, though....so I went for it!!  I just can't believe how expensive some things are.

I actually really like making changes online....it's so nice, and they have more inventory than what is available in the stores (Le Crueset @ Williams Sonoma, and All-Clad @ Macy's, for example)
