marriage license

Hey ladies-
I know i've read a post about this earlier but I can't seem to find it in the search. FI and I are planning on getting our marriage license in the next month or so and we were wondering if there are better places than others to apply? can you go anywhere in MN to apply for your license? We would like to avoid taking time off work if possible but maybe some are open on Saturday. Thank you!!

Funny, I was literally JUST looking this information up myself. I don't know where you are located, but I was just looking at the Scott County information and I see they have extended hours on Mondays and Thursdays until 6. Which is probably when FI and I will have to go since I refuse to take work off for this as well

It totally depends on the county you're getting married in. I'm getting married in Hennepin County and am hoping that their service center across York from Southdale will be able to take care of us. I don't want to deal with the downtown office if at all possible.

2 things: I don't think it matters where you get your license as long as it's in MN for an MN wedding??

also...glad you mentioned this location because it is about a 3 min drive from where I work so that could be very helpful.

Unless things have changed since Summer 09 when I did mine, you can apply for and submit your completed application/paperwork at any location in MN. I live in Ramsey County but applied for mine in Washington County because I happened to be near the license center for a couple other items and just did it there. We got married in Ramsey County so it didn't matter.

This site says you can get a marriage license from a MN Registrar, including from the Hennepin County service centers (like the one by Southdale, Brookdale, or Ridgedale).

There is also a link to where to find MN registrars by county. Just be sure you check the hours before you go- I know the Hennepin County service centers are not open past 1:30 on Wednesdays, which is a really weird time. HTH!

You can apply for the license in any county. I have heard that Ramsey County's paperwork is the most officiant-friendly because they send you separate papers whereas Washington County sends everything (what you need, the license, and the officiant's stuff) all on one page. Either way, it doesn't matter where you get it for purposes of where you are getting married in MN.

I applied for ours as soon as we got the discount paperwork from our Priest. It is true that you can apply for the license in any MN county, as long as the ceremony will be conducted in MN, however it has to be signed within 6 months of issuance so don't get it before than. Personally, I live in Robbinsdale, (Hennepin County) and there was no way I was going to attempt their office, lucky for me I work for Anoka County and I am at the courthouse at least once a month so I went there. It was super quick and PAINLESS no else was there expect the workers. I also had to get a couple extra sheets notarized since FI was unable to come with me and didn't have any problems with that either.

FI and I are taking off a Friday and driving home to MPLS from IA to take care of this (among other things). I also have all of the paperwork printed off and filled out, so that we can be in and out of there as quickly as possible. We are getting married in Hennepin county and getting our license at the Southdale office.

The only thing I wasn't sure of…and this is probably a dumb question, but at the bottom it says that FI and I must sign in front of a notary. Does that mean we need to get it signed first and then bring it in when we apply, or do we sign it in front of an office clerk at the time of application?

Don't sign it until you are up at the window -- you have to raise your right hand and swear all the information is true and accurate to the best of knowledge... etc then you sign in front of them.

FI and I got our over Xmas, we went to the one near Ridgedale and I think we had to wait about 30 min then the actual getting everything together took 5 and that was it. Pretty painless
