Marriage certificates & changing name

After you got married, did they mail the marriage certificates to you?  I know I'm supposed to request extra copies, but I don't know when to do that or if they'll send me one copy to start with.  I got married 2.5 weeks ago, and I'd like to start the name change process soon (I have to change a TON of stuff at work, and I want to wait until it's official).

Any help or info about what you did would be great! Thanks!

Our priest gave us the non-seal copy, then we had to call the county to get our copy with the seal (and send them a self-addressed stamped envelope for it.

I didn't try to do the name change until I had the copy with the official seal.

It takes a minimum of 3 weeks for the paperwork to go through, however you can request the triple sealed marriage record as soon as you are married.  I beleive it's $10.  That's what I needed to have in order to change my name at the SS office, the DMV, my banks, and at my job.  Social Security card should be the first thing you change.  All the credit cards and things like that just required a call to change them.  We've been married almost 3 months now and I think I have almost everything changed, but it does take some time!  Good luck!

I was able to get everything changed without the triple seal copy of mine. In fact, I still have never gotten one.  Should I still get one if I don't need to change anything?

you can request the triple seal 10 days after the wedding-so you are fine. like N said-send a SASE with the request and a $10 money order. the form to fill out can be obtained from the county (we had the pamphlet from when we applied for the marriage license).

once i had the triple seal i first changed my name at the SS office, which required the triple seal (they asked to see it). the DMV was weird with me-they would let me change my name but wouldn't let me get a new picture since i was so close to expiring.

everything else was able to be changed with a simple phone call. the bank wanted to see a copy of the marriage license, but they didn't care if it was the triple seal or not (i didn't have the triple seal with me). i still haven't bothered to change my name on my car title...oops.

Hi Julia! I just checked out your pics and read the review. You looked amazing!

Like Reanna, I did everything without the sealed copy. I went to the SS office last Monday and just received my new card today.

You need a sealed copy to change your passport.

I think it's a crapshoot as far as who you get at the SS office whether you need the triple seal or not.  I decided to just spend the $10 for the triple seal and have it just in case. I took a half day so I can go get my stuff done, and I didn't want to spend an hour or more in line to be told I have to have the triple seal.  I actually called Social Security and asked if I absolutely needed that triple seal or not. They basically said yes, unless your birthdates or ages appear on the marriage license/certificate you have in hand. I explained that I'd heard conflicting stories as to needing it or not, but her explanation was that due to 9/11 and also fraud issues, that they do require a copy that has birthdates or ages on it for Social Security.

She seemed to suggest the triple seal copy has all your info on it--can anyone validate that? I just ordered mine today and can't pick it up til Monday.  Oh, that's also a tip--if you work downtown or it's convenient to drop in real quick, you can actually call ahead and request it, they'll tell you when you can come pick it up, and you just pay cash when you pick up.

Ok so i'm confused...you go get your marriage license like what...30-60 days before your wedding, then the officant signs off on it. Isn't that considered legal then? I know people that have taken an extra day off after their honeymoon to just go and get everything changed. So you need to pay for another license? Sorry obviously i'm new to all this. We aren't getting married til next year, but I want to reuqest off that Monday after we get back from the honeymoon to take care of my name changes...
