How to Choose!?!

The Knot has so many amazing photographers listed and the price range is very diverse. How do you choose a photographer? Does anyone have any tips on things to look for or that are necessities for the big day?

Well, as I just did this this weekend -

I selected my area, and went through each and every photographer within a certain price point, looked at their portfolios, their package offerings, and emailed every last one.

Monday morning my inbox was packed with photographers trying to make appointments, or telling me my day was booked, so on and so forth.

You have to pick one that meets your vision, and even some bigger photograph studios have multiple people working for them so you have to pick which appeals to you.

I would start by setting your overall budget, and go from there, it's easy to get out of hand with the photographer costs.

**edited to add - use your phonebook yellowpages, friends, facebook, word of mouth etc. to ask about photographers friends have used and which they've avoided. A lot of time you can find a rare gem who isn't quite as publicized.

We basically wanted to go as cheap as possible while still be satisfied with the quality. Since our budget for a photographer is quite small, I mainly used Craigslist to find one.

I took a look at websites for any photographers who advertised their prices as under $1000. Next step was to weed out the photographers whose style I didn't like. Then, I wanted to make sure we got at least 8 hours of coverage plus hi-resolution CDs with full printing rights. I eliminated any photographers who didn't offer this. I had my FI and sisters look at the remaining photographer websites. My sister was actually really helpful as she noticed things that I didn't. (For example, she would point out that someone's "candid" photos looked too staged.)

After all this, I only had 3 photographers left, so we went ahead and met with them in person. We wanted to be sure we felt comfortable with our photographer so that our photos don't end up looking forced. We ended up choosing and independent photographer who has only done a few weddings. However, she is super sweet and I think she takes great shots.

    A note about Craigslist:
I pretty much stalked Craigslist every day. Although it was time consuming checking for new listings, I feel it paid off. There are a lot of people who will advertise on Craigslist several times a day every day, so that was pretty annoying to go through. The photographers we met with only posted once or twice during my search, so it would have been really easy for me to miss their listings!
