Outdoor Weddings

Keeping cool in the heat..

Hi everyone,

I'm getting married in April next year. I wish i could say I had a pretty good idea about how the weather is going to be but it seems like most times San Antonio is in its own weather bubble where anything could happen. One year around that time we had a freak cold front..another year it was hot and slightly humid.. another time it was a nice sunny 78 degrees. In the end we have decided to prepare for some heat and we are just crossing our fingers :)

Here is my question....I thought it would be nice to have something to keep the guests cool during the ceremony. I have read about giving out beverages before hand or paper fans..I was just wondering what some of you did or are planning to do for your outdoor wedding.

Re: Keeping cool in the heat..

  • We handed out cold bottled water and offered guests iced tea and lemonade.  We got married in July, outside, so yeah -- no one complained and the weather turned out especially nice.  Good luck!
  • Our programs doubled as paddle fans, and we also provided cold bottled water. Some people moved their chairs into the shade and I didn't mind at all. Whatever they needed to do to be comfortable.
  • We're considering sandalwood fans as favors to be given prior to the ceremony (our ceremony will be indoors but in a building without AC in summer so it may be warm).

I found some nice sandalwood fans on ebay for much cheaper than bridal websites.

  • Thanks, the bottled water is a great idea!
  • I was thinking about doing the fans with the programs on them also.  At outdoor weddings, so many people use the sheets that the programs are on to fan themselves anyways!  I also thought we would provide lemonade, and some option for shade.  Maybe some little umbrellas in the wedding colors...that would make for a cute photo op.

Good luck with the weather!  It's always so unpredictable, I swore I'd NEVER have an outdoor wedding.  Now look at me planning one and stressing out about it until that very day!

  • I LOVE when brides have parasols for their guests - they are so pretty in pictures, AND keep the sun from melting your guests.

Also, if you're not going to have a tent or parasols during the ceremony, maybe just let your guests know on the invites. I recently went to a backyard wedding and was surprised when I arrived to no tent or parasols. I didn't have sunglasses, so it was hard to see, and I ended up getting SUNBURNT! It wouldn't have been a big deal if I had realized that I'd be in the sun for several hours and had been able to prepare, but I wasn't aware, which made it far more unpleasant!
  • Have lots of cold beverages on hand, look into doing the program fans (easy to DIY, by the way) or look into some hand fans. I found the perfect colors of hand fans on http://www.LunaBazaar.com . They have EVERY color you could imagine, and their prices were decent as well.
Omigosh! October 9th is coming at me quick!
