New Years & Vegas

Has anyone been in Vegas for New Years?

How is it?  H and I are trying to figure out if that's where we want to go or not.

I've never been but I'm pretty sure it's a madhouse.

    EXPENSIVE, but fun.

I had friends there this past New Years and judging from the FB status updates, it's pretty awesome.

Yeah the rooms look pricey but I think it could be fun.  Hmmm. Now where to stay?

Do you want to be in the thick of things or have a relaxing vacation?  I've always wanted to stay at M or Red Rock.  For Strip hotels, next on our list is Signature (for the wedding), Aria, Cosmo, Wynn... even the new Mirage and Tropicana rooms look great/clean/comfy.  THEhotel is also very nice (mmm, soaking tub).

tripadvisor.com is my best friend :)  You can see traveler photos.  Much easier to look at than ones directly on a hotel website.

I can't wait to do Vegas for NYE.

Yikes, a total nightmare, oh dear, now I'm scared to go.

As many times as I've been to Vegas I've never been for New Years.  The year before last we were there a few days before New Years and we came back Dec. 30 and they had already started blocking off parts of the strip.  I keep saying one year I want to go but based on the room prices and the horror stories I've heard, I've never done it yet.

Wallacje: you don't wanna be here for new years unless you like huge crowds, super expensive everything, and it's cold

We flew out there January 2nd for our scouting trip and it seemed relatively calm. People must clear out immediately after the party is over! It was really cold though. It snowed. I would have preferred to go during nicer weather.

Might be, but it's not "pretty" snow.  It's usually dirty and doesn't stick.  Winter is just usually cold.  I was there for a football game on December 27th one year and thought I would die of exposure because it was so cold.

Plus the crowds, oh the crowds.  I hate people generally but I doubly hate LOTS of people.

Yeah my sister went last year and the weather was so bad they were delayed getting back to Cali because the roads were so bad.  I've also gone for my bday which is in the beginning of January and it was pretty cold there  :(

I'm a local.  We've braved the Strip the past 2 NYE.  We love fireworks.

For the first, we went to Mandalay Bay.  Since they are on the south end, they are easier to get to.  You can get in and out without worrying about road closures too much.

The second time, we parked at LV Hilton (off-Strip, and you can get there on Desert Inn, which flies over the Strip instead of crossing it).  We took the monorail from LVH to mid-Strip.  Monorail does free tix for locals on NYE.

Both of those options were surprisingly easy when it came to parking and traffic.  Yes, there still was traffic, but not as bad as other places.

If I was a tourist, I would get a fancy room mid-strip.  But yes, rates are really expensive.  They tend to have 2 or 3 night minimum stays at some places.  And don't check in too late - if the hotel oversells (which they do, just like airlines) they'll transfer you somewhere else.
