I know that it is expected that the bride and groom pay for the rehearsal dinner but do you think it would be terrible to have people pay for themselves? As long as it isn't required that they attend?

Nope, you can't do this. The B&G aren't the only ones that case host the RD (my H's parents hosted ours), but the key word is it's hosted for the guests. Like PP said, you don't need to do a rehearsal and RD if you really don't want to. And there is nothing that says it has to be expensive.....pizza and pop is fine.

Make sure you skip the rehearsal AND the dinner. Don't ask your wedding party to rehearse and then send them on their way and just skip the dinner part.

I think pizza is a great idea. Our reception was formal, so it was nice to have a casual rehearsal dinner the night before. (we did our favorite new Mexican restaurant)
Agree with PPs. It's better to skip the rehearsal if you can't afford it. Please don't ask your guests to pay for themselves.
The rehearsal dinner is something of a thank you for your attendants for putting time into the wedding and into the rehearsal. I'd price out pizza and soda, BBQ, sandwich trays, or other non-restaurant type of options. Another idea might be to think about whether or not your ceremony timing and venue and day-of logistics would allow you to rehearse that morning - where you could provide coffee and a breakfast spread.

Awful idea. Skip the rehearsal and dinner if you can't afford to pay for it. Most people are capable of being able to walk down an aisle when told it's their turn.
Definitely just skip the rehearsal if you don't think you need it. Or do it on the cheap. We did pulled pork and fried chicken from a local BBQ place and had ours at my parents' - we had a lot of people and it was still pretty cheap.
If you don't have a rehearsal you can just tell your BP and friends that you and FI will be at X restaurant at X time if they want to join. Then they pay for themselves without you breaking etiquette (again, this is only if you DON'T have a rehearsal)

yes, it would be rude. It doesn't have to be fancy, so pick something like pizza or something
We just went to Pizza Hut for ours; it only cost us a couple hundred bucks, and everyone had a great time. We invited our WP and their SOs, the stepchildren of one of my bridesmaids, parents, siblings, grandparents, our RB and usher and their parents, and our 3 out of state guests. Simple and fun!
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14
