When did this become a contest?

So I was talking to my great aunt yesterday via facebook and she asked me all sorts of questions about my engagement and all that. She's never met my FI and I don't even know her that well. She asked me if I had a theme picked out and I told her I wanted to do a Southern Belle sort of theme, and she says "Oh, a Georgia Peach doing a southern belle theme, that's not very original is it?"
My initial response was so what? That's what I want, and I don't care if every other bride from here to CA wants to do it - that's still the theme I'm going with. I told her it would be a nice experience for my FI's family from England and she said "I don't think they care sweetie."
Now I know she wasn't trying to be mean, but that stung a little bit as I was so excited about it. That coupled with other posts I've been reading on some of the other boards makes me feel like getting married has turned into some kind of contest or something. Who can have the biggest wedding? Who can have the most original ideas? Who can have the most expensive food? Who had the most impressive favors?
Correct me if I'm wrong - but isn't your wedding day supposed to be about the love between you and your FI, and being surrounded by loving friends and family as you start on one of the biggest adventures of your life? Isn't it supposed to be about everyone being happy and all that stuff?

Well anyways, that's my little rant of the week lol.

Your aunt's response kinda made me giggle.

I agree, weddings have become a way to show just how uneek one can possibly be.  Don't let it get to you. Have the wedding you and your FI want and you can't really go wrong.

Yeah, it's funny looking back on it. And like I said, she wasn't trying to be mean - she's just always been extremely outspoken and kind of tactless. It just made me think about when weddings went from being about you to about being "the best"
