Re: Athletic club - minimum $10k? athenaeum - nice?

  • I HATE the athenaeum, but to each their own. Every vendor we have talk to say about how bad they are to work with, the dj we used said they have to shut down 30 minutes early to make sure they are out by the alloted time so that we don't get charge. they nickle and dime you for everything and the event person we had was rude and not helpful, she stated "everything is an upcharge!" blah just tell me how much

when we went to cancel we cancel on Oct 10 and my FI took a note signed to the office and on Nov 10 (1 year out from our wedding) our rep EMAILED me at 345 and said that if we dont cancel by end of business (430) they would have to charge us more money to cnacel! So we had to stop what we were doing to handle it because they lost our paper! i just really don't like them but they place is very nice, but you could also have 7 weddings on one day!

    sorry so long!
  • We had our reception at the Athenaeum on 12/31. I LOVED it there. We worked with Gina and she was amazing. They took such good care of my husband and I and were so on top of everytihng during the reception. I didn't have to worry about a thing. And they food was delicious. They do have a lot of rules that seem a little strange, but Gina worked with us on everything we wanted. And to answer what Tiffany said, our DJ didn't have to stop early. Our reception went until 12:30 and he played until a little after that.

There were two other weddings and an anniversary party the night of our reception (it was New Years Eve) but I never saw anyone else from those groups until we were leaving.

  • Also - we had approx 220 guests. We did our reception in the big ballroom and the ceremony in the Macedonian room.

  • I was an Athletic Club bride -- loved it!  At the time (different coordinator) the minimum was definitely negotiable. Not so sure about now. Doesn't hurt to try if you think you can really do it for less. Have you checked their menu and prices and think you'd come in under that minimum?
  • I've been to weddings at the Athenaeum where you could hear some other weddings' music and you definitely run into other guests when you are heading out to the bathrooms as those are shared. It wasn't a huge deal to me as a guest though. I personally didn't care for some of the food, but other aspects were good. We thought about using the Athenaeum for our wedding but ultimately decided against it. It is extremely pretty though! I think the Athletic Club is goregous! You should def check it out!
  • I think everything about the atheneaum depends on who your sales person is, I have heard amazing things about Gina, but we got Ann, and I did not care for her at all! She was nice but just did not rub me the right way.

The place is beautiful and we thought we could deal with all the rules but in the end the athenaeum was not for us, we are more laid back causal and we jumped into something based on the looks and I am glad we got out, but I bet it will be amazing which ever you with!
  • I highly recommend the Faculty Club at OSU. They have a $5k minimum and are extremely accommodating. I could not have been happier having it anywhere else. We had the entire buliding to ourselves and each level had it's own element. Cocktail hour, dinner, reception, etc. The coordinator, Laynie, is worth having it there alone! Although the gorgeous elegance of the buliding helps too. :)
