Baby and Momma update for the day

Here's my daily update of my 3 friends that are pregnant/new moms going through a tough time.

FI's cousin (the one not due until April) is doing better today.  They don't think it's kidney stones now, but they still don't know what it is.  She said they moved her to a bigger long-term room in the maternity unit, but she is able to shower and walk around a bit today.  She seems a little more chipper today and more like herself, but she said she's still in pain and still pumped with meds.

My friend that had a baby 2 weeks ago got hospitalized yesterday for an infection.  She found out today it started out as ecoli and got into her bloodstream and caused a kidney infection.  She said last night was really scary in that her temp spiked to 104.5 and she was shaking uncontrollably for about a half hour like she was having a seizure.  She got a catscan and that's how the doctors figured out it was a kidney infection and she was passing a kidney stone.  Earlier today her temp dropped to 101 and she was feeling better.  She has to be 48 hours fever free before they send her home.  When she goes home she will have to go everyday to get iv's for 2 weeks.  Not the ideal situation for a new mom, but she's doing better now.

The last friend was full term yesterday and they induced.  They had to do an emergency c-section today because the baby was in distress.  He's about 4.5 lbs and is in the nicu.  He's doing well and mom is doing well.  Hopefully they will be able to come home soon.  I'm really not a fan of hospitals so I'd rather wait to visit until they come home.

Happy to say everyone is doing better than yesterday.  I can't wait until everyone is back home and back to themselves.

  • In reference to your first friend... what kind of kidney issues is she having?

With my pregnancy, i had an issue with my right kidney. Almost my whole pregnancy the doctors thought I was having stones, however they put in a stent between my kidney and bladder as my kidney was not draining. What ended up being the problem was that my uterus was pressing on my right ureter and blocking my kidney from flowing. It was insanely painful and I had a few surgerys during and after my pregnancy. maybe this is the problem she is having? If you need any more info, I'm more than glad to share what I went through!

Sorry to hear that your friends are having such a hard time with thier pregnancies. I know how scary it can be when things don't go smoothly! I never thought I'd be one of those to have such complications during preganacy, but it's all worth it now that I have my healthy little girl :)

  • Well, friend #1 is going home.  I guess it was just the muscles in her ribs and the doctors were making it worse by constantly pushing on them.  It also didn't help that they didn't let her walk around so she couldn't stretch them and move them.  Happy she's going home and that her baby can continue to develop in the womb.

Friend #2 is still in the hospital and may have to have surgery to remove a kidney stone.  Just as she thought she was getting better her temp spiked again and she had a minor surgery to have constant iv's.  Not the best way to spend the first month of mommyhood.

Friend #3 is getting ready to get up and start moving around.  The baby is still in nicu but they are doing some testing to see if he has pneumonia.  He is getting stronger though and the long-term looks good.

Thank you Urchin.  It's just crazy because all of this happened at once.
