Having Your Dress Made?

Has anyone ever had their dress made? I like a dress that a celebrity was wearing except for a few things that I would change. So, I thought I might have something similar professionally made from scratch by a lady in town who specializes in bridal gowns.

What were your experiences?

Re: Having Your Dress Made?

  • Have you seen her work, do you fully trust her?
I guess I would just be afraid.  I can walk in to a bridal store, try something on, say yes/no.  If someone makes it, I'm kinda stuck with it- like it or not.  Same reason I'm afraid of the online route.

Just because you saw it on Four Weddings, doesn't mean it's a good idea.
  • I agree with the prior posters. Try some dresses on if you have not done that yet. Go to several salons in your area and try on dresses that are similar in style to the one you want made. You may find ultimately that the style you love does not flatter you when it is on your body, and fall in love with an entirely different style.

Having said that, I made the dress in the picture below. Simple A-line with sweetheart neck, ruching at the waist, lace overlay on the bodice. I have sewn for almost 40 years, and it took me about a month to plan it in my head using 3 different patterns, then another month to lay out, cut, sew and embellish. I knew I had the skills, and in the end it didn't look like the dress I intended to make because I could not get the bodice and waist to easily flow like the one I had a picture of. I compromised, and was happy with the end product. I would have freaked trying to recreate something for someone else's vision.

You state this is a local seamstress who makes wedding dresses. I would take the picture to her and see what she quotes you for making the dress you want. It's rare that you can get something to match your exact vision for less than a dress off the rack, but if you are willing to pay for a professionally created dress, then go for it. Just be prepared if it is not what you had in mind all along.

Also, many bridal gown makers do dresses for their fashion lines that are similar to dresses worn by celebrities or on the red carpet. Check that avenue first.

    Good luck.
  • Thanks, ladies!

This is the dress that I found: http://www.eveallure.com/image/product/b/201125/emma_watson_sexy_white_custom_made_dress_for_met_ball_2010_4348_2.jpg

I just wouldn't have the split go that far up for a wedding, and maybe have some sort of ruching instead of a corset-look. I've worn a dress like this one before (with ruching), but it was black and I found it at a TJ Maxx. I loved it! The only reason I didn't buy it was because the bust was sewn in a way that looked like I had perpetually erect nipples and I couldn't get over that! Sorry if that's crass :S
  • I second all the comments above about trying dresses on first and making sure you find someone very trustworthy.

I just thought i'd add that etsy is a good place for this.  There are some bridal seamstresses on there that have been doing it for years and have good reviews.  Just be cautious and give them pppllleeennntttyyy of time!  They take awhile!
