How to "fire" photographers

thinking I would save money, I decided to hire a friend to do photography for our wedding.  We decieded to test drive him with our engagement pictures and the result was TERRIBLE!  My fiance ended up giving all the direction and the pictures were awful!  We need direction; we have a huge wedding party and we need someone to direct them for great pics.  
I recently had a professional shoot with my family done and I mean the photographer was giving a ton of direction!
So how do i fire my photographer.  There was never a contract or a named price its more an issue of letting someone down gently.

    Why would you hire someone, friend or not, before you had seen their work?

    That being said...the only way is to tell them that you have decided to go a different way for the photography.  Be honest...say you have a rowdy family and WP and really need a pro to corral them because you don't need the stress on the big day.

    Make sure you see WEDDING photos from the person you are considering...not just family ones.  It is a totally different thing.
    My baby girl is a married woman...and now my baby girl HAS a baby girl. Time unfolds in such an amazing way. I've been blessed!

    Thank the friend, make they are compensated for those photos he took and let them know you are needing to go with someone else due to family, etc.You have no written contract so there is not to much they can do about you going with a professional.

    Definitely look at wedding photos of other photographers before hiring them. Look at the ones online and at any sample wedding albums they have. It will give you a great preview of what your photos would look like.
