How much should I expect to pay for photography?

Hi ladies!!
I'm still working through budgeting, and I'm trying to figure out what to expect to pay for a photographer. I've seen a ridiculously huge range of prices, but what's even more frustrating is that most photographers I've come across don't list their prices at all!
Can you guys give me an idea of how much you spent and what you received for that price? Any advice would be helpful :)
Also considering RI photographers because the wedding is in Groton, CT.

Re: How much should I expect to pay for photography?

  • Their prices are pretty much all over the place.  I would say the average price I saw was about 3K - 4K.  I'm paying 1800 but I took advantage of a special our photographer was offering at the time, so for the same services it would have been 4000ish. I'm getting 2 photographers for the entire day, and a  right released cd with the images after the wedding.

If you see a photographer you like, definitely reach out to them. Most of them were upfront with the prices and understood when I told them that was out of our budget.

    Hope that helps!

  • We paid about $3500 and got 2 photographers, an engagement session, proof book, album, 20 x 30 print, and CDs with our photos

  • This is a tough one. The cost can range from $1,500 to $8,000+. Many of the photographers mentioned on the boards are $2,500 - $4,000 with a few exceptions on either end (at leat in my opinion). I believe it is important to think about why type of photography you want (photojournalistic vs traditional) as well as your budget. Then pick a few photographers that fall into both categories to meet with.

You will spend more time with your photographer on your wedding day than your husband! Make sure you like his or her personality. That is key!

As mentioned above, finding a photographer to release the images to you is great. That way you can make your own album or print the photos on our own (photographers usually upcharge you like CRAZY for that stuff). Spend money on the things that are important to you. We spent the most on our actual photographer (who included rights to the images for free) and an engagement. We are having a small wedding, so we skipped the second photographer and opted out of the album as well (which can run $1,000+!!!).

Just email the photographers you like for their prices. They will send them right over. Most don't post their pricing on their website.

I would suggest Eric Brushett Photography. Eric is awesome and can fit most budgets. www.ericbrushett.net

    Hope this helps. Good luck!
  • Im paying someone 500 to just take pictures of our wedding he is a photography major and hes done weddings before. but he will only be giving me a digital copies of the photos and he will be ediiting them.
  • Agreed with PP that they can be all over the place for prices.  I'd start by looking at styles of photographers that you like and calling them to find out.  If you want someone local to Groton - check out Sam Chingo.  He's from the area.  I looked at him/met with him, but went with someone else with a little more edgy style.  Sam was the least expensive of all the photographers I looked at, but my budget for photography was very high.  I spend 5600 for EPics with CD and guest book, and wedding photos (2 photographer plus assistant for the full day - unlimited time).  Wedding photos are CD only (albums would have been extra).
  • Yes, $3k to $4k seems the average. Some are more, some are less- always ask yourself "why."

Check out Studio1923. They're fantastic artists and great people!

Very good point!  Do this with all your vendors!!
  • Our photog is on the higher end.  Almost $6K for ephotos, guestbook, photobooth at wedding and 2 photographers for unlimited hours on the wedding day.  we also get all our photos on CD with rights to print.  We met with photographers whose prices ranged from $3500-$8,000.  Just so happens that we connected best with someone who was in the higher price range.  I will mention that a lot of the lower priced photographers didn't seem to be very "gear heavy" and we were concerned that lighthing might be an issue for those photographers, and effect the quality of the photos.
  • Similar to what some others posted, we are going with a "Shoot and Burn" package. Where our photographer spends the whole day with us and will give us a cd with all of the rights to our photos. From there, we can order all of our pictures on our own and make our own albums. That will help us save money upfront, allowing us more room in our budget for other things we want at our wedding, like a photobooth. And then, when we are able to save a little bit after the wedding, we can go back and print what we'd like.

We are so excited about our photographer, he does amazing work. He's been in the business for a long time and is very professional- but also relaxed, fun, and cool! He put together a "Shoot and Burn" package for us which will include 10 edited prints, from getting ready, first look, ceremony and all of the reception, (at our multple locations), for $850!

I know this option may not be for everyone, but it works for us!

I think the price you can expect to pay really depends on what exactly you are looking for. Try to figure that out- then do some research! Don't be afraid to ask for exactly what you want :-)
