Blocking Rooms

I'm not sure what to do in this situation.... I'm having my reception at an upscale hotel which has expensive rooms (but well worth it, in my opinion!). I am trying to give my guests a more affordable option for overnight accomodations, so I'm thinking about booking a blocking of rooms at the Comfort Inn which is 5 miles down the road from the reception site. The price would be $139.99 which is more affordable than a room at the reception site. (I still think the Comfort Inn could have offerred me a better price for a block of rooms, but maybe I'm being cheap :))

Anyways, I am not sure if I should block the rooms because I read mixed reviews on the internet. SOme say that this Comfort Inn was terrible, some say it was great for the price. Now, I'm sure there are mixed reviews about EVERY Comfort Inn (and every hotel for that matter)...but my fear is that I will offer this hotel as an option for my guests, and they will have a bad experience. The last thing I want is for my guests to remember my wedding as a bad experience.

I suppose you run this risk when you block rooms at any hotel, because you can never guarantee that your guests will have a wonderful hotel stay....but I just need some opinions. Should I block the rooms and offer it as an option? Even if it might not be a great hotel?

Re: Blocking Rooms

  • You will always have bad reviews. When we booked our honeymoon I looked at all the reviews and a lot of them are horrible. But the good reviews were really good so we went with it anyways. I work at a hotel, and honestly you do get good comment but the majority are bad. And it's not because all the guests have bad experiences, it's just because the few that do leave so mad that they want the world to know about it. I think the comfort inn should be fine. Though I've never stayed there so I dont know from experience. But i don't think it's just some trashy hotel. What town are you looking at? We are looking for one too so I may be able to help you.

  • Are you able to go and visit the Comfort Inn?  We were having a similar issue in that the hotel I'm staying at is expensive but it's my wedding day so I can justify it.  There was a hotel 5 min away and the rate was much better but it made me nervous so my FMIL and I took a Sunday and went down and looked at it and it was actually very nice.  I feel so much better about getting a room block there now!  Ultimately, people don't have to stay where you block...it's their choice and you can't worry about it...they will all figure it out. :-)

I would make a call that you would like to set up an appointment, indicating that you are looking at blocking some rooms for your wedding.  This is what we did - they showed us around - showed us the rooms - and then we made up our minds. I would go if possible, as a frequent wedding guest, I also prefer having a 2nd option for accommodations if the 1st is a bit expensive. And quite honestly, I rarely care about the place we stay as long as it isn't completely disgusting!

Agree with PP- we checked it out before we booked the block of rooms. If I was a guest, I would love a second, less expensive option regardless- because really, how much will they ACTUALLY be in the room?
  • Are you having a wedding website? I wrote on my website "A great place to check out reviews is tripadvisor!" so that my guests could look into our different hotel blocks and decide where they wanted to stay.
  • We checked out the rooms...suite and standard room...because I read a few bad reviews online.   We went to the front desk and advised them of the bad reviews and wanted to look at the rooms.  The clerk was happy to assist us....gave us the key to the room and allowed us to check it out...no questions asked.  The rooms were great..clean and nothing like the reviews.

Many times I think reviews are posted by competitors....so do not believe everything you read!!  Check it out!!  Good luck :)
