Getting in Shape

motivation should come in a bottle...

I've tried REALLY hard to stay motivated by just telling myself...
"it's for your wedding! don't you want to look fabulous in your dress?!"
"you need to get healthy"
and
"you don't want your man to have to marry that 40 extra pounds!"

but I really cannot make myself go to the gym, and it's even harder for me to eat right. I can make excuses like a champ!

Does anyone have a trick that really helped them keep going?

Re: motivation should come in a bottle...

  • Although I've just started being successful recently, i think it's because of the reward system I set up for myself.  None of the rewards are things that i get regularly by any means.  They are literally a treat.

When I hit 5lbs lost, my H bought me a mini-bottle of champagne and my favorite bite-size chocolate bar.

10 lbs - will equal getting to go out to eat since I haven't dared since starting.  It's hard to eat healthy at a lot of restaurants, but I'm not going to worry about that too much on reward day.  No cheese-fries, but i might get a dessert

15 lbs - opi nail polish and a manicure

20 lbs - hair pretties (pins, clips, maybe a fascinator)

25 lbs - this is the halfway point and i will get one guilt-free day of indulgence.  i may very well have cake for breakfast and ice cream for dinner

30 lbs - Bath and Body products

    35 lbs - a new purse

    40 lbs - a slinky nightie

45 lbs - a salon day at the ritzy and fabulous salon in town.

50lbs - Victory is it's own reward.  But i WILL need new clothes  ;)
  • For eating right, just don't buy anything bad. I find it helps to think of it in terms of what I can buy with the money I would spend on bad for me food. Do I want to spend $5 at starbucks every week, or do I want to save all those $5's and get an awesome pair of shoes?

If there are no chips in the house, you won't eat them at 9 pm :p

The problem with the gym is that you probably just don't actually like it. That's why I can't make myself go running no matter how much I know I should. Try joining a class of something you might like. Pole dancing, yoga, martial arts, etc...

My first trick is don't be so hard on yourself.  All those these things you say to yourself seem to be positive they really aren't.  My first comment i was going to say was wow you have some unsupportive people in your life.  then I realized you are like the rest of us and it's you saying these things to yourself.  We all do it so that's ok.

Try saying truely positive things to yourself.  Things like You look great, you deserve to Feel great!  and if you slip up, don't beat yourself up about it just get back on the right track.

You're going to look great at your wedding no matter what size you are.

    Good luck!

I agree 100% it NEEDS to come in a bottle along with liking healthy better for you foods and not junk.

I would like myself to loose 15 by August 1st week(in case needs some nip tucks to the dress). Is this possible to loose that by then?

I am going to set goals as well
    5lbs pedicure
10lbs new Dooney and Bourke (thats motivation alone)
15lbs, Spa day hot stone massage, brazilian wax, peidcure, eyebrow wax,  and some of my favorite wine.

Now if I can get my behind in gear....

  • I loved your reward list! I'll have to make me something like that for myself. Ice cream for breakfast would be wonderful for me to aim for! ;) Seriously. Those are good little rewards to go by. Thanks for the tip. I need to motivate myself to get back to p90x, I'm good with the eating part, but I need to get back to it.
  • Getting healthy should be FUN

a few ideas to help that:
    1. get a friend's support and bounce ideas off of each other. encourage progress
    2. join a fun club or activity. you dont have to live on a treadmil. go for bike rides, or learn to play a sport, or go swimming on a warm day, or take a camera on a hike. or go out dancing! GET MOVING. =)
    3. find healthy recipes and get into cooking! maybe take a class on healthy eating and learn that there are Healthy ways to eat what you want! losing weight doesnt mean eating celery for lunch.  it means using FRESH ingredients and healthier alternatives in some of your favorite dishes.

rewards are a good idea - but don't make them junk food -- otherwise you'll be tempted to make rewards for every little thing, just to be able to eat it. =)
Perhaps every day that you stick to your plan, you donate 5cents to a "healthy fund", and then be able to spend that money on something fun for the wedding, or a spa day, or just plain fun activities. =)

  • Hey missy,

i was thinking the same thing. (and i know this is going to sound like its a paid for ad, but its not, its my honest to goodness real life review)
I did some research, as I am a desk jockey (i sit all day at work) and I have very little free time or energy when I get home, so the gym is out (i think the gym feels like a punishment). I needed something that would help me out a little, but naturally. I dont like side effects. my first target was hydroxycut but after reading some really really negative reviews, and finding out it would mess with my nerves, and my blood pressure, I moved on. next I looked at Alli, which is an all natural fat blocker. It does work apparently but it has some embarassing side effects (they call it the Alli Oops)
I finally stumbled upon a product called Proactol. Its a fat BINDER, which means it uses 2 types of natural fibre, 1 dissolves in the liquid fat in your stomach and forms a viscous solution that your body isnt able to absorb. the second type of fibre breaks down the fat that lines your innards. it all passes through your system harmlessly. there are no side effects, its backed by 8 clinical certifications, and its got a 100% money back guarentee.

there i got through the sales pitch lol. I ordered it over a month ago, and have been on it for a couple of weeks. When i started i had 30 lbs to lose. I've lost almost 10lbs so far in 2 weeks.
it is a little pricey though. i started with the 1 month trial pack which can cost almost 90$ with shipping, but if you order more months at a time, you can save something like 60%. its really worth it. and i'm not trying to preach proactol or anything. im just saying, although it doesnt come in a bottle (it comes in blister packs) this is what you have been waiting for.
feel free to messege me about it. im open, honest and completely real.

Sunlai:  So she asks for motivation help and you tell her to take a pill?  That pill you're pushing looks sketchy.  At least alli was approved by the FDA
  • Yeah, I don't think I'm into taking a pill. It just doesn't sound healthy.

I think you ladies have helped me figure out my problem. I hate the gym. I need to find something more fun. I work odd hours, so I can't take a class, but I'm thinking of buying a zumba tape and begging my fiance to start going on power walks with me at the local nature trail (I won't go by myself since safety has been an issue a year or two ago out there).

I may also use the reward system. I could really use an excuse to take a spa day! Or to treat myself to a mani/pedi for every ten pounds! Laughing

    Thank you ladies!
