Gatlinburg, TN

Hi all,
Have any of you ever been to Gatlinburg?  FI and I are really considering going there for our HM.  We're getting married Oct 27th.  Any tips of what to do, where to stay, etc?  I've never traveled w/o my family so I'm kind of clueless on the whole process.  Any tips would be appreciated.

Thanks!

  • We are doing parts of West Virginia/DC/Baltimore area... We got a book from AAA... it has lists of hotels and stuff to do with price guides for hotels and places to eat you can probably fid one on the AAA website etc or ebay .. Or a local travel place has books for numerous somewhat local places.

  • It's a fun place to visit but it definitely depends what you're into and what type of vibe you want.  One of my favorite things to do was the gem mine, although they do try to sucker you into getting your gems set into jewelry.
Whoever said it was supposed to be happily ever after is a big fat liar.
  • I went last November for my FI's fraternity's mountain weekend.  There are a bunch of really cute little cabins you can rent if you don't feel like staying in a hotel.  And they have kitchens so you can cook if you want.  We didn't.  But it's an option.  Also in Gatlinburg, there's a big aquarium you can go to, plus there are plenty of places in the mountains to go visit/hike at.  We didn't go for long ( 3 days), but it was beautiful and I'm so ready to go back.

  • There is tons to do here.  You can hike, shop (there are outlets stores amoung the many local stores), lots of fun resturants, lots of "fun" things to do (white water rafting, helicopter rides, zip lines, Ripley Believe It of Not Museam, Put-Put).  You name it Gatlinburg has it.
  • Okay. I'm less than two hours from Gatlinburg. So, I've got offer my two cents worth.

Most folks here consider Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge to be one area because they're located so close to one another. 30 minutes, or so, depending on traffic. Since others have shared about Gatlinburg, I'll add my thoughts and info about Pigeon Forge.

Of course, Sevierville / Pigeon Forge is most famous for being the home of Dolly Parton and Dollywood. Dollywood is certainly worth a visit, especially if you enjoy amusement parks, rides, and shows. Also, Dolly's Dixie Stampede dinner attraction is fantastic ! Both the food and the show is awesome.

Two other shows I'd recommend are The Comedy Barn, a laugh till you split your sides show, and The Hatfields & McCoys' Dinner Show. The food is great and there's plenty of it and the show is hilarious. Plus, if you go on the Hatfields & McCoys' website, you can call for a special on tickets for both it and The Comedy Barn. BOTH shows for $57 per person. That's just $28 per show. You can't beat the price for such great entertainment. Oh, and buy The Comedy Barn's DVD, its a priceless recording of the very show you saw perhaps with you on it..

Oh, I also highly recommend the Smith Brothers dinner show !  A great buffet dinner and a show you'll not soon forget. Again, buy the DVD, its well worth it.

Google both Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge / Sevierville for other terrific ideas that might catch your fancy. There's plenty for everyone to enjoy. Also, sign up for Sevierville's email for extra discount offers.

The most important tip is to book any shows early, a week or more in advance, to ensure you're able to obtain the best seats possible on the days you want.

Hope you truly enjoy your visit into our neck of the woods. **simles**

  • When my FI and I went on our first vacation 2 Octobers ago, we went to Gatlinburg (or there abouts).  We stayed in a cozy little cabin called Amy's Nook.  They were part of Baskins Creek Vacation Rentals.  We loved it.  There is a kitchen, so you can cook your own food, which is nice if you are trying to keep it cheaper. If you book it yourself through any of the rentals down there, call them... Ask them if they can give you the cabin a bit cheaper (you'd be surprised how many will say okay).

We went to Wonderworks, and did a lot of hiking - check out Clingman's Dome, and go off onto one of the trails (then you can say you've hiked the Appalachian Trail).  There is an apple wine place which has some sweeter wine, and they give you a brochure to do the "wine trail" which ends up with a complementary wine glass, just for tasting not even buying.  AND you have to try the Donut Friar in the village in Gatlinburg.

    Hope that helps.
  • Stayed at this place a few years ago. Gorgeous!!! We stayed in the off season but I don't think it's terribly expensive during the regular season. Good luck.

  • Gatlinburg is a blast! We rent  a cabin there every year. I would definitely rent a cabin for your honeymoon instead of staying at a hotel. They're so cheap! We use vrbo.com to rent so thats a good option if you don't have one in mind yet. We mostly hang out at the cabin enjoying the quiet time away from our hectic lives and go hiking. Abrams Falls and Clingman's Dome are very picturesque. There's also an outlet mall thats pretty good and lots of go carting and mini golf in town if you want something a little more adventurous and fun. Oh and ZORB! You get inside this inflatable ball and roll down a hill. Good times :)
