Let's talk tuesday

So, I hate car accidents.

I'm not injured at all, but my car may have been totaled today.  Fortunately, it was the other guy's fault, so the insurance should cover it all, but I hate being without my car :(

I just hate that feeling you get during and after a car accident.  Ick.  But I'm blessed that everyone involved (3 cars) was okay.  It's been 9 years since my last accident.

How's everyone else's week going so far?  I'm spending the rest of the day at home (ahh, silver lining!).

Got one more week until SPRING BREAK! WOOHOO!  I know spring break doesn't mean much to most working people, but as a student and soon-to-be-teacher, it means a lot.  :)

Re: Let's talk tuesday

  • Thank God you are okay!  I have been in the middle of a three-car wreck before (rear-ended and then pushed into the car in front of me) and it is no fun no matter how "okay" you are.

And I totally hear you on Spring Break.  Tomorrow is a standardized testing day, Thursday is a review day, and Friday my Honors classes are taking a quiz and my On-Level class is taking a test.  Then I hit the road and drive to Pampa to spend four whole days with my hubby!  Since I was a student teacher, I have always said that Spring Break is definitely designed for the teachers -- not the students.

  • Thank God you're not hurt!  That sounds totally scary.

My day started out with my work computer deciding it wanted a vacation, so it didn't turn on.  just about 1 hr in IT, and I'm finally starting my day.  :(  Oh well.  I can at least get most of my work done still, and I was able to catch up with a friend that works in that department.  Blessing in disguise, I guess.

  • Accidents are the worst :(  I'm glad you're okay, but that's a shame about your car.

I voted this afternoon, and was VERY disappointed that I was only the 45th voter of the day.  In VA, it's an open primary so you don't have to be a registered Republican to vote.  I understand that people sometimes feel like "I don't like either candidate so it doesn't matter,"  but it still makes me sad.

  • Yeah, Professor, that's basically what happened to me.  I think the truck that hit me is going to have to pay for the damages both to my car and the one I hit though.

FI and I were planning on going on a quick 2 day trip to San Antonio next week, the 15th-16th.  But I'm not sure if I'll have a car, and I'm not sure if I want us to make the drive in a rental or not.  We'll think about it.  We just both really wanted to get away.  Sometimes I feel like I don't enjoy my vacation time as much when I'm home.

I'm observing 2x a week at a highschool, and fortunately, the students were just taking a benchmark for TAKs today.  So, it wasn't a big deal that I missed.  I don't remember, professor, what subject and grade level do you teach?

@ Kamakanani, doesn't it suck how dependent we are on technology?  Today I left my phone at home (I NEVER do that--I should've taken it as an omen!), and I felt so lost without it.

  • I would think making the drive in the rental is better than doing it in your own car -- because it saves wear and tear on your car!  But I totally get it.  My accident happened the day before I started new teacher training my first year.  Fortunately I lived a few blocks from my school, so I was able to walk/arrange rides really easily.  The hardest part was that I graduated in August, and actually started training the week of graduation, so I had to really pressure the insurance company of the girl who hit me to get me a car quickly so I could drive from Dallas to Waco to walk in graduation.

And to answer your question, I teach 9th grade Biology.  I have to administer the TAKS tomorrow for the 10th graders, though.  Not excited.  =(

  • ugh, problem is, the other guy never really pays it all.

problem with totals is that they give you the value of hte car that was totaled.  so let's say you have an awesome car that is reliable and runs great, but its only valued at $6k.  you could never replace that car for $6k, and so you are stuck buying a new one and having a car payment when you might have been happy as a clam with an older car and no payment.

ive also gotten screwed on rentals that were owed to me.

its the worst!  i hope it all works out.
  • Glad that you are okay. Accidents are the worse. I too am looking forward to spring break, which starts on the 17th for me. I'm a Ph.D. student so while the university offically has a break and I won't have classes most graduate students in my program (molecular and cell bio) stick around and work in the lab. Thankfully my boss is great and agreed that I could take the week off. I really need it to! I just took (and passed!) my qualification exams at the end of Jan and definitely am feeling the post qual slump of being completely unmotivated about actually getting my research done. Plus I spent the time I took off between Christmas and New Years stressed out and studying, so I feel like I could really use a vacation. I am going to Kansas City to hang out with my bridesmaids and college friends and go out for my bachelorette party (kinda early but about the only time I could travel) and then my mom is also going to be in town and we are driving to St. Louis where FI's aunt is throwing me a shower. I am super excited to see everyone.

Yeah, but that still gives you a decent down payment to reduce the monthly payments, if necessary.  I agree with you, though, that having to buy a new car is definitely not always a fun experience.

  • Well, my car is a 2011.  I'm hoping that means I should get pretty much what I paid for it (I bought it exactly a year ago brand new).  I guess we'll see.

Or it may not be totaled-- it may just need extensive repairs.

I might just still go on my quick trip in the rental car.  I seriously need a vacay, haha!

Just two more days to get through, and I have nothing on fridays!

  • @monkeysip - I find the reliance on tech to be a blessing and a curse, considering both my and FI's paychecks rely on it (I work in ecommerce, he does computer repair).  I do enjoy just unplugging sometimes.  When SoCal had that massive blackout last year, it was kind of nice to just sit in the house with my grandparents and FI and listen to him play piano.

  • Wow, monkeysip! Glad you are okay, but as others have said, what a bummer about your car. I too had an accident when I was rear-ended while sitting at a traffic light. It was kind of surreal...one moment I was sitting there listening to NPR, then I heard this KABAM - there's really no way to reproduce the sound. I don't think I registered the physical sensation, just the sound - until I looked in my rearview mirror and saw the car that had hit me, which was pretty much squished in the front.

I remember I was smoking at the time and was most worried about what had happened to the lit cigarette I had in my hand. Not sure I ever found it, but at least it didn't set anything on fire. My insurance company was incredibly rude to me about getting police reports, etc. and not thinking I needed to go to the hospital initially - trust me when I say I'll never use that company again! My car wasn't totalled, though it was darned close. I drove it home, but when I took it to the Saturn dealership for the appraisal, they took one look at me and one look at the car and told me it wasn't drivable. I had a rental car for three weeks before they got mine fixed...I never felt the same way about that car again. I was glad to trade it in for my truck.

My Tuesday has been unique...I actually spent the morning at a professional development day for the local Catholic Charities organization, presenting a seminar on understanding and treating sex offenders. I typically enjoy teaching and training, but I'm not sure how it was received! There were people who said very kind things and some people in the front row who looked like they were asleep...so I keep going over it in my mind and wishing I had done this, that, and the other differently...but I got to come home early, so that's a good thing...

No spring break for me! I don't think I've had one for over 20 years, LOL...

  • That sounds really cool, Linda!  I mean, it's really good that they had a seminar about that.

I know how you feel about the teaching though.  Last week I got to teach my high schoolers for the first time.  I taught two whole days.  Geez it was exhausting, and of course all I kept doing for the next several days was think about what I should've done better or what I should not have done, etc.  That stuff can drive you crazy!  Of course, you were teaching adults, so I have less sympathy for them if they weren't paying attention!

  • Aw, thank you, monkeysip. I appreciate that; my husband (I still love those words!) said the same thing...that it's that fretting that makes me good at it. Plus it is a tough subject with a tough crowd, but if I even planted a few seeds in a few minds, I did what I prayed the Lord would let me do.

  • Monkey, glad to hear that you're ok, even if that means a bunch of hassle now as a result.

Linda -- sounds like an interesting day.

All those who are as excited as i am for Spring Break...bring it on! We have three days (including 2 days of tests) and then I'm just relaxing and enjoying some time off. I would argue that ALL breaks are as much for the teachers' sanity as for the kids.
