Getting in Shape

Need some advice for the last 5 pounds!

I have been working out for about a year now ( lost 35 lbs) and I only have about 5 pounds left to go to finally fit into my old clothes. However I have been plateaued since July. I mostly use 30DS and started P90x the last two months to try and change things up. I cut a lot of carbs and any sweets but still nothing. I eat a mainly vegtarien diet. I only eat meat one-two times a week. FI thinks I need more protein and it will help. Is that true?? I am also hypothyroid which make it a bit harder. Its not that I don't trust him, I just have my dress alterations in a month and I do not have the time to gain any weight!

Any advice you can give me is appriciated!
TIA

Congrats on the weight loss so far!!!  35 pounds is fantastic! :)

I wouldn't say I'm vegetarian, but I'm definitely squeamish about making meat at home.  I have egg beaters and I LOVE making tofu.  My Mom actually taught me how to "fry" tofu in about 2 tbsp of olive oil.  Slice it really thin and let it cook over medium heat on each side until crispy (usually a couple minutes per side).  (I then dip it in low-sodium soy sauce or teriyaki sauce.  YUM.)  I also switched from cow's milk to soymilk.  Whenever I want a "treat", I have a small glass of chocolate soymilk.

Are you currently drinking your calories?  Can you switch to water exclusively?

I would HIGHLY recommend myfitnesspal.com to track your food.  You may be undereating, eating enough protein without knowing it, etc.

    HTH!

<div>This sounds super tasty, but it sounds like a LOT of oil.  I wonder if there's a way to do this that might be a little healthier?  I've never tried baking tofu, but it would be an interesting experiment.</div><div>
</div><div>For the OP, try switching up your workouts--incorporate intervals of different speeds.  This keeps your body from getting comfortable, and can speed up the way your body burns energy.  For example, if you normally run for 30 minutes, try running for 10 minutes, then run hard for 2 minutes, easy for 1 minute for 15 minutes, and then the last 5 minutes run your regular pace for a cool down.  This doesn't mean "sprint for 2 minutes" but it does mean push yourself at a pace that is not comfortable--as fast as you can keep for 2 minutes.</div>
  • I agree with FI add protein.  If you're not big on meat add eggs.  I was a runner for YEARS and in the end I didn't change my body til I changed my diet.  The biggest change is eggs (with spinach) EVERY morning without fail.
And don't be afraid of healthy fats like olive oil.  Your body needs healthy fats and will 'let go' of excess body fat when its not feeling deprived.

BTW 35 lbs is an amazing accomplishment!  You should be very proud!

  • I would definitely look into cardio intervals to break through that plateau. It can be very frustrating and demoralizing to work hard and not see any results. But you have lost so much already- congrats on that!!

Thank you for all the good ideas!

I started my fitness pal and I didn't even realize how many calories I was drinking! I will try the tofu sounds yummy! I have to watch Soy because it interfears with my synthroid. My daughter loves eggs in the morning so I guess I will try and join her!

35lbs sounds like a lot but I did have a baby so I am just trying to get my body back.  I am very happy with how I look now and so is FI. I just don't want to have to buy new clothes for the sake 5 lbs/ a small muffin top!
  • I hit a plateau too for a few months. And in that time, I beat myself up, binged, really reduced calories, pouted... all the bad stuff. I never stopped running three days a week, walking a mile a day and lifting twice a week, though, and slowly tried to improve my eating habits with more protein, more fruits and more vegetables. As a result, I became a better, faster runner and I think my body became a better machine, because despite all the mistakes I've made, fun I've had and ups and downs, I weighed myself yesterday for the first time in months and I'm down 4 pounds. Had no idea.

Focus on what you're eating and see what you can do to improve, push yourself exercise-wise whenever you can and drink water. You will make lots of progress  -- just not immediately. Good luck!
