You really need to start shopping ASAP if you want to order a dress you may have to put a rush on it. If you don't mind buying off the rack you may be ok. Call any stores you were thinking of shopping at and find out what their timeline is. They can always take in your dress even if you loose some more weight.

Edit: your FI/DH will think you look beautiful no matter what you wear just remember that. Also take along one/two very supportive women to cheer you along!

eeeeek...I wouldn't wait any longer.  Some dresses take 9 months to over a year to come in.  You're going to be VERY limited in designers and will also probably have to pay a rush fee.

you need to start looking asap in case there are any alterations needed. A lot of bridal shops ask for you to give them 8 months to make the dress/alterations. Buying off the rack closer to the date is always an option but after spending all the time and effort you have on your wedding you don't want to be dissapointed that you won't be able to find your dream dress.

My wedding is early August, I went out 5 months before and I was fine.  Its hard when you arent a size 2, but you are wonderful yourself, everyone is different.

My wedding is August 27th of this upcoming summer, and I went last month. (Also got engaged recently... March of this year.)
Luckily I didn't have any problems, and my dress will be in July 5th.
It can be done. But definitely start soon! =)

Ditto PPs, get out there ASAP and start trying things on.

I went to one salon that only had samples up to maybe a size 8 and it was very discouraging. I came back here and asked for recommendations on places that had samples bigger than that ... I wound up going to Park Avenue Bridals in verona and liked that place a lot. Russell's in Linden and True Love Bridal in Matawan were also highly recommended.

You might be able to buy a sample off the rack if you find something you like and it's the right size. Or you can contact a wholesaler - pearlsplace.com, netbride.com, rkbridal.com - and see if you can get the dress quickly through them.

Another option would be to find a style you like and then see if you can find it for sale on eBay, Craigslist, the Trash To Treasure board on the Nest, preownedweddingdresses.com, savethedress or oncewed.com. It'd come in quicker because those dresses are sold by individuals - either because they wore it for their weddings and are re-selling them, or because they decided on another dress and need to get rid of that one.

You could also try on bridesmaids' dresses and order it in white/ivory ... since those are typically less intricate than bridal gowns you might get a quicker delivery time.

Nordstrom.com, dillards.com, bluefly.com and anntaylor.com have some pretty white evening gowns. You could probably have those delivered in a week or two.

If you don't have your heart set on white, why not consider an evening gown or bridesmaid's dress in a color you love? Tons of brides get married in a colorful dress. Look online or go to some nice dress boutiques and try stuff on.

Get out there NOW!  You need the time for the dress to come in.

Just think about how good you will feel if they have to take it in before the wedding!  Don't worry about your weight---if its meds you have no control over it!

thanks guys !!  i will have to suck it up and start looking and you are right -- it will feel good to have it taken in --

plus someone suggested to me to find a body shaper (???)  and that will take about 2 dress sizes off of me anyway -- is this true?

I ordered my dress in August and it just came in April...so 8 months was needed.  I'm sure many companies can but a rush order, but you may pay extra.  It all depends on the brand of dress.  Also, you could always buy a sample dress.

This happened to me too; a lot of weight gained due to medication. I used to be a size 8 and now I am an 18. I am not going to pretend I don't feel bad about it but ultimately I have made peace with the fact that it's not the most important thing either, no matter what the magazines try to tell you. Go for your dress SOON though. Dresses with side-gathered ruching work well for ladies like us -- mine has helped make me feel prettier.

    Good luck. I COMPLETELY understand.

I am a plus size bride and dreaded going dress shopping too. It turned out to not be as bad as I thought it would be. I would second MBCDEFG about Park Avenue Bridal. They have lots of samples in bigger sizes and they are very nice. You could also try David's Bridal, since I think they can get dresses pretty fast and have a large selection. Get one good girlfriend to go with you for moral support (don't make it a big ordeal with your entire bridal party) and just suck it up and go try some stuff on.

As for the body shaper stuff, I'm wearing Higher Power Spanx and they are great at sucking you in. I wouldn't say it takes off two whole dress sizes, but it definitely makes you more sleek and smooth.

    Good luck!

i may be an unusual case but I bought my dress from David's bridal and when I ordered it they said it would take about 12 weeks to come in.  Got a call a week and a half later and it was in.  I went to David's initially just to try on different styles of dresses because I know they have lots of plus size samples and whoopsie, I fell in love with my dress.  You never know.
