Ceremony advice- Buffalo, NY

My parents raised me Catholic but I no longer associate with that church. I would consider myself a spiritual person, but do not attend or belong to a church. My FH was raied Christian, but is no longer religious. My parents offered to pay for our wedding without us asking, and we've booked a beautiful reception site with their help. Our problem is that my parents want us to get married in the Church, and we do not. They are very old-fashioned and difficult to negotiate with... Any advice, or location ideas that will be flexible in their ceremony (ie music, non-biblical readings)?

Re: Ceremony advice- Buffalo, NY

  • most catholic parishes will restrict you to biblical readings and appropriate music.  You do have a choice of 'with mass, or without' (which I'm assuming you'd just do the wedding ceremony, not a whole religious mass)
The church we're using in the area did let us at least use classical pieces (clair de lune, piano solos etc).

Other than that, i'd look to other denominations for a more flexible ceremony.

[QUOTE]When you are married in a church, you use their rules.  You might try a Unitarian Universalist Church. As for pleasing your parents, if you are going to accept their money, you must let them have a say in your wedding plans.  The alternative is to pay for your wedding yourselves.
