Need Motivation!

I have been doing really well with eating lately.. keeping those calories down was hard at first, but now it seems like second nature. The only problem I am having is with the work out part. I know that I should be working out to lose weight and gain muscle.. but when I get home from a nine hour day at work, all I want to do is relax and watch TV! I have good intentions.. but can't seem to get my butt off the couch. Anyone have any suggestions?!

Re: Need Motivation!

  • Work out before work, not after.  Even if you have to get up at 5.

Planning your workouts for the end of the day makes you much more likely to talk yourself out of them.
  • I hate to work out, but I am forcing myself to do it...I too am tired and not in the mood after work, so I have been getting up earlier and working out before work. For me it is actually not so bad after all. I have more energy and because I get it out of the way early I am not thinking about/dreading it all day at work! Good luck- just remember you can do anything once you put your mind to it. It took me a while to get mentally prepared to start eating better and exercising. My FI paid for my membership at the local YMCA where they have a 10 week "Lose to win" program. It is hard getting there for 6am but so far so good. I am in week 2. I keep thinking about the dress I want to look great in...that helps me stay motivated. I also am doing the 30 day shred dvd. I haven't lost any weight yet ( I keep gaining and losing the same 1 1/2 pounds.) But I am not getting discouraged, I just try to work harder...Undecided

Working out before work is a great option, but if you are like me, you might already get up before 5 so that makes working out before a tough option.

How long is your lunch break?  I know a few people that will work out for half of their break (if a gym is nearby).

Pack a gym bag.  I HAD to start doing this.  I have an hour commute on public trans so it's easy to just sit, get bored, and very tired.  I used to go home and immediately pull out a snack, sit down and convince myself not to go to the gym.  I started packing a gym bag.  I get home, and grab it and immediately go to the gym and don't allow myself to sit down and snack.  I usually have a granola bar or something of the like for the commute home.

To motivate yourself while there,  listen to music and choose a playlist that gets you "pumped up."  It makes a huge difference.

Lastly, I find the daily accountability thread on here to be a good motivator.  It sucked constantly writing that I didn't work out.

Find an excercise activity you enjoy. You will be more motivated and stick with it if you like what you're doing. Do you like to run? dance? yoga?

Try working out with a friend. Having a workout buddy will make you more accountable and it's just more fun!

Sign-up for an excercise class. Again, accountability. Plus if you pay for it, you may be more likely to go. I do some at the park district. They have a variety and keeps me interested.

Set tiny goals for yourself. If you enjoy running- sign up for a 5k. Or a charity walk/run. I read somewhere once that you can put a dollar (or any set amount) into a jar everytime you work out- You can then treat yourself to something every few months with the money you have. New pair of jeans anyone? massage? You get it.

    Good Luck!

  • There are some really great points above! I'm going to piggy-back off a few of them.

-Working out before work is awesome..IT SUCKS getting up that early but once you are moving you'll be glad you did it. You'll probably be happier at work. I swear.

-Like PP said, I have to get up at 5 to get to work and it's not an option for everyone. Keep your gym bag with you so you can go straight from work.

-My new motivation has been my FI. We push each other...there are days that I just want to lay and nap instead of going to the gym and he makes me get up and go. I do the same for him. It doesn't have to be your FI but if you can find someone to workout with or hold you accountable (even it's on this website!) that can help a lot.

-Set goals. I forced myself to sign up for a 10K on Thanksgiving..my favorite holiday because I love to sit and do nothing but watch football, eat and get drunk. It kept me running through the colder weather and really made me feel awesome. It was a great morale boost especially going into the holidays. Having something to work for is important!

  • I have to echo everyone else and say workout before work.  I work full-time, have an 8 year old son, am planning a wedding, and go to law school five nights a week.  I wake up at 4:15 a.m. to go the gym.  I know that if I didn't do that, the rest of my life would fall apart.  Going to the gym keeps me strong and sane.

  • I get same feeling, I need a workout buddy, that ususally gets me going. But other than that, once I step into the apartment its hard to get me out. Specially on those rainy dark days.
  • I lay my workout clothes out on my bed before I leave i the morning that way they are staring at me when I get home.I feel like once I put them on I have to go workout.
