More Wedding Planner Questions!

Hi all,

I was wondering if you could provide me with what qualities you look for in a wedding planner?  What do you expect from them?  What's the most important service that they can provide for you?  Are they worth it?

Thanks,
Payal

Responsiveness and attention to detail are my top qualities I look for.  You should have confidence in a wedding planner that has the experience to work in a pressure cooker and juggle many different items at the same time.  At the same time, a wedding planner should be able to work with grace and professionalism in high stress and be firm with others when necessary without being rude.

If you are looking for full wedding planning, they should be able to do all the legwork and present you the "short list" options.  If you are looking for day of service, ask for references and see how much experience they have.

I would say having a DOC is worth it - mine came free since our caterer provided him for us but we would have paid for his services since I didn't want to coordinate my own wedding after planning it for 18 months.  There are lots of supplies to bring, set up, breakdown.

I recommend hiring an outside person versus relying on family or friends...that way your family and friends can be a guest to your wedding versus having a "job" throughout your day to make sure everything goes off perfectly!

aside from finding someone that can work within your budget, ask about travel fees, and get references. anyone can give canned answers to inquisitive questions.

If you are not booking with the owner, make sure you like the owner and would also want to work with them.  I was in a situation where my DOC ended up leaving the company and the owner was supposed to fill in.  I wasn't thrilled with the way the owner handled the situation and I ended up cancelling.

I wanted a wedding planner who didn't always check with me for every little thing. I've been to weddings where the planner was always coming up to the bride to ask about this and that. Why have a planner then?

I wanted someone I bonded with, knew what was important to me and handled the rest without needed to constantly check- in with me.
