Our future plans are in the works :)

My soon to be MIL is giving us her house with the stipulation that we build her a granny flat (a separate building - the only way i'd agree haha) and we could do whatever other renos we wanted to do. This is such a wonderful offer because 1. she lives in a great location and neighbourhood (note the U haha) and 2. we'd be mortgage free in a 5-600K valued house in just a few short years.
So the plan is to sell our house in the spring and use the money towards putting a second level on the house and building her living space. It's very exciting because we currently live in a townhouse, which is very nice and a new suburb, but space is limited both in and outside of the house. His mom's house is a corner lot on a dead street with a big yard; perfect for our family :) And right now, we are 20 min drive for everything whereas she is right in the city, within walking distance of everything we could possibly need. And less of a drive to our cottage too... that will rock on Fridays during the summer!
Sooo all that to say we are meeting with the architect next week! We are all eager to see what our options are and what we could do with the house.

  • That is beyond exciting! You'll have to keep us all updated on the progress!!

  • That is awesome! I'm assuming she's an awesome MIL, for you to want to live in the same house as her. Not many can say/do that! Your future will be amazing due to the fact you wont have a mortgage soon. 30 years over your head is daunting.
  • That is amazing!! Congratulations!!!! I'm so jealous!!

Yes, she is a really great MIL. We kinda "get" each other because she ended up raising my FI and his brother mostly on her own because she split from her husband when FI was about 7 because he was an alcoholic and abusive. She's a really nice lady and I know she's looking forward to grandkids who live in town (FI's brother lives in California!).

I have to admit that at first I was against the idea; I didn't want to live my parents let alone someone else's parents! The selling point was the fact that she will have her own complete living space; kitchen, laundry, everything! We will be able to connect via the garage, but we will have 2 separate homes. We are also looking at future beyond his mother as well. As sad as it is, she won't always be with us, and in the event that she passes, the addition could be rented out. We will be living en route to all the major colleges and universities so it would be an easy rental to own.

  • Wow, that's an incredible opportunity! It will be nice to have your FMIL close by when you need a sitter an whatnot, but not actually in your house.

Just because you saw it on Four Weddings, doesn't mean it's a good idea.
  • That is so incredibly generous of your MIL. What a wonderful opportunity!

  • WOW, that is so generous of her! The idea of us having a 30 year mortage terrifies me, frankly. We are looking in the 500-600K area within 5 or so years and that just seems like a gigantic sum. The idea of someone GIVING that to me, well I'd be so happy that I could cry!
