Hair and Makeup.....Is one stylist enough??

So I have started building a relationship with a salon and stylist in my area.  I did the research to find out what it would cost for me and my 4 bridesmaids to have our hair and make up done with me getting a demo a few months ahead of time.  I am thrilled with the salon and the stylists they have.  I sent a message to my girls and they are excited about it too.  I told them hair and make up is optional, because I know some of them are on a budget.

Anyways, this was the plan until my FMIL asked me if I wanted her stylist, from her area, to come up to us on my wedding day and do everyone's hair and makeup.  She highly recommends her and I'm sure she will do a lovely job.  She even offered to do a demo for me ahead of time.  My concern is that with 4 bridesmaids, 1 FMIL and 1 bride (me).  It will just be too rushed on the morning of the wedding.  I haven't said yes or no to the offer, what do you think I should do?  Also, my FMIL offered to pay for all hair and makeup, which would definateltly take the burden of my budget consious BMs.

    What time is your wedding?

Generally you need 30 minutes for hair and 30 minutes for make up for a BM/FMIL type and you'd allot 1 hour for bride's hair and 45 minutes for bride's make up.  If anyone has particularly difficult hair (i.e. very coarse, curly, thick, long) you'd want to add 10-15 minutes.  With a single stylist that means she'd need to be going for about 8 hours solid once you add in turn over time.

I'd talk to FMIL and point out the time necessary and ask if she thinks the salon could send 2 stylists.  If she's prepared to pay for all the hair/make up I don't think it's rude to suggest since she shouldn't care if it's 1 stylist for 8 hours or 2 for 4 each.
  • I agree with the PP as far as time and IMO, 1 stylist is not enough for your group.  In my area, most MUAs require an assistant for 5 or more (which is an added cost).

It's your wedding day and your choice which route to go.  If you decide to stick with your salon, just tell her you appreciate her gracious offer, but you've already arranged for a salon.  Unless FMIL's MUA will give you a trial and bring an assistant, I would just stick with what you've already chosen.  A salon setting can be fun for large groups and it's much more efficient also.
  • The wedding is at 4pm, but we would like to take pictures for about an hour before hand with my BM's and family (NOT MY FIANCE).  The venue for the pictures is a 1/2 hour from the ceremony location, so we would need to be ready by at least 2:30pm.  Thanks ladies.  I'm going to talk with her and see if her stylist has an assistant that would be willing to travel to my area.  If not, I think we will probably go with the salon.  I think that would be more fun anyways...
  • I personally think that one person for 5 people is WAY too much. And I am a stylist / make up artist. I would never commit to that many esp when I am doing the bride and not in a salon (for some strange reason I am totally slower at someone's house, even my own compared to a salon) I have done dozens and dozens of weddings.

I usually add in extra time, b/c you never know if someone is going to do something like wash there hair and come with a wet head (( please don't )) So I say an 1.5 hours for brides hair and m/u. And an hour per bridesmaid for hair and m/u and 45 minutes for mob / mog. But it would also depend on the styles wanted, length and thickness of hair and how elaborate they want the makeup.

Then I add an extra 1/2 hour for cushion... cause they is always a bm that is late.. lol. I would go with the salon that you started the relationship with.
  • Yup, definitely not enough time for one person.  Talk to you FMIL and see if they can send 2 or more people or just go with your salon.  Good luck!
