feedback on a favor idea and on escort cards please?

So, we are having a photobooth, but thought it would be nice to do another little favor for our guests too. I am really tired of getting cheap trinkets at weddings and don't want to do that for our guests.  I think the candy bar idea is supercute, but our wedding is pretty formal and I just don't think it would fit.

Our baker is famous for her homemade macaroons (they have even been on the cover of magazines around here, that is how gorgeous they are.)  I found this picture on pinterest and thought it might be good inspiration for a fun favor:
Pretty Packaging - Macarons

I thought we could do one ivory macaroon and one purple macaroon with a silver bow? Do you guys think guests would like that?? I might make a fun tag with our initials on it to attach to the bow to make it a little more personalized too...

Also, we need to figure out some way to customize our escort cards so that our waiters know which meal each guest ordered. Is anyone else stuck with this task?? I am worried about color-coding something, only to have a guest place the tag into their purse or on the floor and defeating the purpose of the color coding.  Any ideas would be much appreciated!!

Happy Friday everyone :)

  • I think anything edible people will love it!

  • I absolutely LOVE this idea.

  • Agree with bells, people love food haha. We're giving chocolates along with the crossword puzzle favors, just so that people have a little something sweet before dessert.

  • I love the idea! We are doing something really similar with a cookie from my FI's home country Peru (they're called Alfajores). They are pretty much the same size and shape as macaroons, so I've been looking up packaging options for macaroons for ideas. So far, I'm leaning towards clear boxes tied with ribbon like this:

  • As for the escort card ideas, I'd loooove to hear some ideas, too. We have the same issue. Our caterer needs to know who gets what, and other than writing "beef" on the card, I wanted something cuter. But no such luck with ideas, so far.

I considered maybe doing a framed picture with people's table numbers in it, and then having actual cards at the tables (so they don't have to bring them with them/potentially lose them). But we've already contracted with the florist for a big placecard table arrangement...maybe I could just remove that and use the extra money elsewhere, actually.

I think I've talked myself into the framed picture with table numbers within this actual post.

  • First off... LOVE the macaroon idea. We are doing edible favors as well.

For the escort cards, we are doing that exact idea. Originally I had envisioned having the placecards when you come in. But, then our venue said I needed some kind of system for meal choices. I didn't really want to go with the "cow sticker/chicken sticker" idea - it sounded tacky. My mom was also concerned about the placecards actually making it to the table.

SO the new plan is to put the place cards at the place settings - blue for beef and purple for chicken, with something cute for the kiddos and their meals. Then when you walk in, I will have 8x10 silver frames with scrapbook paper in them, showing a list of who is seated at which table. We'll have flowers on that table, along with some framed engagement pics so I think it will look nice. Hope this helps.

  • this board is the best!!! thanks so much for your feedback ladies :)

Bmore I love your box idea for the cookies! it's awesome that you guys have a cookie idea from Peru....that just gave me the idea that MAYBE I could look into the option of doing an Indian sweet instead of a macaroon.....hmmmmm....decisions!!

I think you guys are totally right about the frames with tables numbers and then having the cards already at people's places at the table. I joked to my fiance that we should have the escort cards be in the shape of the animal they will be eating (example: a huge fish) but didn't have any real ideas.

Do you guys think people will put place cards into their purses even if they are already sitting on the table?? I am just worried about slowing down the meal service and want to make sure everything is crystal clear and obvious to our servers!

  • @Butterfly, have you asked your caterer for ideas on this? They might have ideas on what has worked well (and what hasn't worked) from past events.
    Wedding Countdown Ticker
  • That's a good point. I don't think people will pick up their cards, though. The only time I pick up my card is when I'm trying to remember which table I'm supposed to go to. Hopefully people will go right to their seats when appropriate. The only problem I envision is everyone ignoring the signs until the LAST SECOND and then there being a crowd of people trying to figure out their location.

I still don't know what will indicate "beef" and "fish" but I guess I'll brainstorm this weekend with the caterer and will let you know if she has any unique ideas!

  • Yes, my caterer just recommend colored stickers on escort cards....but I didn't love that idea! I think the actual background color of the card would perhaps look better than just a sticker....but I still am not totally sure!

Lauren, if your caterer has any genius ideas, please fill us in!! I am just afraid that "purple = chicken and silver = salmon" might start to get confusing to servers.....

I too was a little worried about a massive crowd surrounding the frames with names and table numbers....I am guessing that as soon as the DJ announces it is time to enter the ballroom and be seated for dinner, people will immediately crowd the table and I am afraid it will be chaos!
  • From what I've seen at weddings, most people put place cards right on the table when they find their seat... just what I've observed.  I always stick them on the table, as well.

You could always put a small sign up where the cards are laid out instructing guests to keep them on the tables when they select their seats or something..?  I've seen people use different color ribbons on the individual cards designating their guest's dinner choice.

My SIL is making us chocolate-covered Oreos and she's putting them in these little cute boxes:

Also, if you guys give those Indian honey milk balls as favors, I'm crashing your wedding. SOOOOO good!

    you are totally a genius!

the oreos are adorable, i LOVE the ribbon color idea (much cuter than a sticker), and the honey balls (i am assuming you are referring to gulab jamens, excuse my spelling as i probably butchered that) are my FAVORITE Indian sweet....so if we end up going that route, I would totally choose those :)
  • HTH!

YES that's them!  They're ridiculously sweet and probably 673947856834 calories, but totally worth it hahaha

Totally agree. For some reason, the sticker thing bothers me. And my guess is the server is going to be like picking up the cards to figure out which color sticker is on the card...ugh.

Maybe if you put a sign like "FIND YOUR SEAT!" as soon as people walk in, MAYBE the chaos around the frames could be avoided...but that's a big "if".

  • RIBBONS! YOU GUYS ARE GENIUS!

    God I'm a nerd.

  • Adorable!!

I've been trying to figure out the place cards too..I have the escort cards picked out, now I don't want to dictate where people sit at their table, but I need a way for people to know...I may just put a sticker on the back of the escort cards so the waiters know...and not to worry about extra paper for place cards
  • I like the idea of something edible, too.  I was thinking the exact same thing - I don't want to spend money on something that people are just going to throw away!

This is kind of embarassing, but I don't know what a macaroon is :-(
My entire life, I thought macaroons were these coconut cookies that look like little mounds, sometimes dipped in chocolate. But I've been seeing the ones that you have in the picture all over the place (meaning on Food Network and Martha Stewart magazines), and I am confused. But I think they are very very pretty! And I think that they are a good idea for guests because they will most certainly use them!
  • I really wanted to do macaroons as favors.  I should really find a new shop to do that since my friend used to make them but closed down his business.

Sara - French macarons are different than the coconut things here.  They are basically meringue cookies with a cream or jelly filling, similar in fashion to an oreo.  They are to die for and delicious if made right and you can get them in many flavors and colors.  There is also very few ingredients and therefore a lot of my family that have allergies can eat them.

    Anniversary
  • Anything that people can eat will be fine, me I am doing little bags of mints that match my wedding colors along with a small candle in a holder for my guest.

I thought the same thing to until I just read this post!  We are doing these cupcakes in mason jars for our favors...I LOVE how they look.  The cake and frosting will match our colors. :)  I think the macaroons are a great idea.  No advice on the escort cards. Sorry!
